To all whom z'z may concern Be it, known .that l, JLiUs WEGNER, a citizen ofthe United States, and resident of the borough and county of Queens, city and Stateof New York, have invented certain new andfuseful Improvements in EX- paiision Feed Rollers, of which the followinvention relates tov feed rollers and more particularlyto feed rollers for feeding webs of material and has for itsobject to provide a simplified and efficient construction whereby the diameter of said roller, either throughout itsentire length vor at any one'or more points thereof, may be increased or diminished within certain limits. ,It is veryoften the" case, because of unevenness in the dimensions of a given web of material due to stretch or shrinkage thereof, `to feed such webs` uniformlyvin a lineal direction. Forthe purposes of describing the inventiton, it will be assumed thatit is applied to a feed roller only at one end thereof,- it being understood that this isonly an exam'- ple and thatv the device may be duplicated or' located only'at the other end of theroller or at intermediatev points thereof. The roller 10 may be of any desireddimensions and constructed of any suitable material and, as; shown, isnmountediipon a shaft 11 by mean-s of spiders 12, the shaft 11 being journaled in ' bearings 1,3 forming part of a support which, in thepresent instance, `is shown in the form of a 'frame 14. 3. yIhe combination of a roller provided with a plurality of splits at its one end to form a series of resilient segments comprising integral extensions of the main body of said roller, a shaft carrying said roller, members secured to said segments and mounted upon said shaft so as to be radially movable relatively thereto, outwardly diverging arms on said members, an operating member slidably mounted upon said shaft and co-operating with said arms to radially adjust said members whereby said segments are adjusted to provide a progressive variation in the outer circumference of said roller from the fixed ends of said segments to the `free ends thereof and means including a pivoted lever mounted externally of said roller for shifting said operating memben el. rThe combination of a roller provided with va plurality of splits at its onev end to vform a series of elastic segments, a shaft carrying said roller, members secured to said segments and' mounted upon said shaft so as to be movableradially relatively thereto, outwardly diverging arms carried by said members, a cam member slidably mounted on said shaft and havingan inwardly converging surface co-operating with said arms to radially move said members whereby said segments are adjusted to vary the outer circumference of said roller, a rod'slidable lengthwise of said shaft, a connection between said rod and said cam member, a pivoted lever connected with said rod for shifting the same to operate said cam member, a fixedscale and a pointer on said lever co-operatingvwithsaid scale to indicate the extent of movement of said lever. v
