Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that W8,-WILLIA1[ D. BART- LETT and SYDNEY MARQUIS, citizens of the United States, residents of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which we have contemplated applying that principle', so as to distinguish it from other inventions. v
Our invention relates to pumps and particularly to pumps designed to furnish water, lubricant or other fluid to metal working tools. Particularly, our invention is designed to provide a 2-way pump, of a new and improved construction,
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying our invention, the disclosed means, however, constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be applied.
In said annexed drawings:
Figure 1 represents a central vertical, longitudinal section of a machine embodying our improved design of pump; Figure 2 represents a front view taken in the plane indicated by the line 11-11, Figure 1; Figure 3 represents a vertical transverse section taken in the planes indicated by line III-1H, Figure 1, a rear washer, hereinafter described, being omitted; and Figure 4 represents a section taken in the plane indicated by the line IV-IV, Figure 3.
Referring to, the annexed drawings, the body portion of a' machine embodying our improved design is indicated by the ordinal 1, entrance to and exit from which for any liquid used in connection with machine tools is indicated by the ordinals 2 and 3, respectively, As shown in Figure 1, the inlet 2 and outlet 3 are both at the top of the body member 1 of the impeller casing so that the impeller casing forms a trap for liquid, retaining therein liquid up to the level of the inlet upon discontinuation of the operation of the impeller whereby the pump will olperate to create the necessary suction t t e inlet when again operated. without priming. Within this body member 1 are containe our improvements including a bell mouth opening for the outlet 3, hereinafter fully described. To complete the machine there shown and within which bracket is rotatably mounted the machine shaft 5 fixed longitudinally by means of the stud 6 and nut 6* and Journaled in the bushings 7 and 8.

It will be noted that the end of the shaft 5 contained within the body 1 is formed with a number of grooves or flutes 10, there being shown for purposes of illustration, four of said flutes. The function of these flutes will be hereinafter fully explained. Said end of the shaft 5 is also formed with a central hole 11 and there are milled through theend of the shaft and intersecting said central hole 11 a, plurality of slots 12 within which are tightly fitted impeller blades 13 now to be described. The construction of these blades 13 is plainly shown in Figures 3 and 4. They are made of spring steel so as to stand a considerable angular bend, the bend shown in the accompanying ses of illustration, be-

Said bend is made washer 14 with a central passage 15 of somewhat greater diameter than'the diameter of the shaft -6 is disposed in the body 1 adjacently the inner edges of the blades 13. As shown in Figure 1, the body portion 1 of the impeller casing is provided with an in ternal shoulder 14", of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of the opening in the side 'thereof covered by bearin bracket 4 through which the washer 14 an impeller member are inserted, to form a seat for the washer 1a spaced from the rear wall 16 of the body member to provide an auxiliary liquid supply chamber 17 between washer 14 and wall 16 to maintain in the casing a sufiicient quantity, of liquid to enable the impeller to create the necessary (1 suction in the inlet pipe to draw liquid into through the propeller during operation.v
.the blades, in the The aperture 15 and the flutes 10 in the shaft 5 provide a satisfactory passage intothe pump, the fluid being taken into the 1mpeller as near to the center aspossible, by reason of the provision of the flutes 10, whereby the fluid is not thrown in eddy currents into the outer chamber, as would be the case were the inlet further out towards the ends of the blades.
As plainly shown in Figure 3, the blades 13 are flexible so that if they intercept pieces ofmetal or any other obstruction, the same ma be passed without any damage.
s plainly shown in Figure 3, we have formed the outlet 3 with an enlarged opening 3, the same being, in eneral, a bell mouth opening, and the speci 0 construction which we have shown consists in enlarging both sides of the opening, as shown by 3 in the direction of rotation of the impeller blades 13. This construction greatly enhances the effectiveness of the outlet 3 in either direction of rotation of the blades 13.
The relative disposition of the outlet 3, the shaft 5 and the blades 13 constitute one of the principal features of our invention. The design is purposed to provide a pump in which, if for any reason it is desired to run the blades 13 in either direction .with equally satisfactory effect, in so far as the umping action is concerned, the same may be effected. We accomplish this purpose by disposing the outlet 3 so that the pro ectiOn of the axis thereof intersects the axis of the shaft 5, the intersection in the form bf pump illustrated being at right angles, as plainly shown in Fig. 3, the blades 13 being so disposed upon the shaft 5 that the projection of the ax s of the outlet 3 outs said blades 13 centrally of their lateral edges as the same rotate. It is evident that this construction effects the desired purpose and does not result in different effective.

We do not wish to be understood as limiting our improvements in the class of pumps described to flexible blades, inasmuch as rigid blades would accomplish many of the purposes of the design; nor do we wish to be limited to the use of two spring steel members bent at right angles to form four blades, inasmuch as any other number of members might be bent at other angles to form other numbers of blades.
What we claim is:
1. A pump comprising the combination with a body member provided with inlet fluid connections, a single outlet, and a shaft rotatable in both directions; of impeller blades secured to the shaft, the fluid outlet having an enlarged opening upon both sides in the plane of rotation.
2. A pump comprising the combination with a body member provided with inlet fluid connections, a single outlet, and a shaft rotatable in both directions, the shaft axis and the projection of the axis of said outlet intersecting; of impeller blades secured to the shaft, the arrangement being such that said proyected axis intersects said blades centrally of their lateral edges as the blades rotate, the fluid outlet having a bell-mouth opening in the plane of rotation.
3. A pump comprising the combination with a body member provided with inlet and outlet fluid connections and a rotatable shaft,.the latter terminating at one end in said body member and being formed with a plurality of longitudinal slots intersecting Silld end; of impeller blades secured in said s ots.
y 4. A pump comprising the combination with a body member provided with inlet and outlet fluid connections and a rotatable shaft; of spring members fitted intermediate of their ends in the end of the shaft and bent at an angle each toform two blades disposed in transverse planes.
5. A pump comprising the combination with a body member provided with inlet and outlet fluid connections and a rotatable shaft; of spring members fitted centrally of their ends in the end of the shaft and bent along said central lines each to form two effective blades disposed in transverse planes. 7. A pump comprising the combination with a body member provided with inlet and outlet fluid connections and a rotatable shaft; of impeller blades secured to the shaft, the latter being provided with a flute or groove between the blades providing fluid communication into the body member.
8. A pump comprising the combination with a bod member provided with inlet and outlet uid connections and a rotatable shaft; of impeller blades secured to the end of the shaft, the latter being rovided with a flute or groove between the blades providing fluid communication into the body member.
9. A pump comprising the combination with a body member provided with inlet and outlet fluid connections and a rotatable shaft, the latter terminating at one end adjacent said inlet connection and being formed with a plurality of slots intersecting said ends ;'of impeller blades secured in said slots, said shaft being provided with a plurality of flutes or grooves between the respective adjacent blades, roviding fluid communication into the b0 y member.
10. A pump comprising an impeller casing, having an impeller receiving portion, a liquid supply portion, an inlet communicating with said liquid supply portion of the casing, and a single outlet having the axis thereof disposed radially with respect to the axis of the casing and having its inner end flared outwardly toward opposite sides of jthe axis of the casing to provide an enlarged opening into the casing a rotary impeller having radial impelhng members mounted in the impeller reoeiving portion of the casing, said impeller being rotatable in either direction; and means providing an axial inlet from said liquid supply portion of the casing to said impeller.
