To all @QU/tom t may conc-em i f it lrnown that I, 4'loi-rv JLLOBRIEN, a citizen of the United Stategand, resident ,ot thecity of New. vYork, borough yofBroolrlyn, in the4 ycounty of KiIIgS 'aDClSte/L New York, have vinvented a new.l and .lm-
provedCheclr Protector', of which. the fol.
lowing' is a full, clear,'and exact description.
.My invention :relates to checlfprotectors, and aims to provide .certain new and useful improvements in connection with a device of this character, and more particularly over` the structure presented in my copending application. j
lliiore particularly my present invention aims to provide a device of the character stated which Amay either be carried in the users pocket or :l'orm a part of a writing implement, it this is desired, so that the same will be universally adaptable.
Further it is an object or" this invention to provide a check protector which shall be Aextremely simple in construction and positive in operation, and which also may bo used by the' operator in a prefectly normal manner. j
Further objects of my invention will appear in the annexed specification taken in connection with the drawings which latter illustrate one practical embodiment oi the same, and in which;
Figurel is a side view of my improved typeof check protector and showing the same inuse.
Figures 27 3, ll and 5 are somewhat dia'- grannnatic views illustrating the construction and disposition or" the respect to eachother. n
Figure 6 is sectional side view taken through the protector.
Figures 7 and 8 are sectional views taken alongl the lines 7 7 and 3-3 and in the direction or the arrows indicated in Figure Il, and
, :Figure 9 is a sectional view taken along the lines 9-9 and in the direction ot the Varrmvs indicated in Figure 6.
Referring now more particularly to F igure 6 it will be seen in the embodiment illustrated that the protector includes three main pieces, to wit, a stem 10 of any desirable shape and material which is slidably encircled by a sleeve 11 preferably having its parts one with exterior Jface knurled'as at-12, and a housing 13.
tion of the lt'will'jbe seen that the parts are retained assembled by virtue of the fact thatft'he sleeves 12 carries a pair Vof pins 15;` `the former riding in an angularly disposed slot 16 formed in the housing 13 while the latter "projects into a-'slot 17 fformed in thefstem 10.
, urther 'the stem lO'is Vprovided witl'i'ja projecting portion 18'` the head of `which Vis enlargedasat v19 and carriesa .pair of spaced ears 20 'between 'which a toothed wheel 21 is rotatably mounted. lt will be seen that the pin 15 preferably has its inner end eX-` tended to project slightlybeyond the head 19. This will further'act to prevent an Aaccidental detachment of the parts, and it will be understood that upon the sleeve V1.1 being rotated .that any longitudinal movement of rre-l sgrarEIS Partnr n.IfFt@Ese :ron-N lrosrrn onRinN, or :enooxtvia:newfizoiair.V
' -Spe'ei'caton of Letters atent; 'Patented 3 1922..: l' Application 'md-'August 2, 1921i seri'iraisazis.
this element with respect to the stem 10 will be precluded in that the pin l5 will simply Yride withinthe slot 17.
Further by virtue of the angular disposislot'lG, the pin 15 will cause the housing 13 spect to the stem 10 and by reason of the fact that the housing 13 is formedwith an opening 22 it will be appreciated that this will resultin thefwheel 21 extending beyond this housing as in `Figure fl when said housing is retracted, and that the wheel 21 will be completely enveloped as in Figures 5 and to move longitudinal with re-v 6 upon the latter being projected., `Further i in this connection it is to be noted that a rotation. oi the housing 13 with respect to the stem lO'is prevented in that a longitudinal groove 24 is formed in one of these members, which groove acts 'as a guide for the pin 25 carried by the second of the same.k
To now provide means which will permit of a person utilizing this device in a normal manner it will be seen that the housing 13 has its forwardV end inclined as at 23.
Fromthe foregoing it will. be seen, attention being invited to Figure 1, that anoperator may hold the protector in a perfectly natural manner, in that it is permissible to actuate the device while the same is held in an inclined position. j v
Thus all of the objects of my invention as set forth in the preamble orl this specifica#V toothed iyheel carried by. saidr stern, ahous- Y ing secured to said stern, andnnea-ns for4 effecting a positive projection and retractiony Y toothed Wheel carried by said stem, a housing, a sleeve encircling said stein and hous-v "lng, -for permitting said housing to bernoved of said housing With respect to` said stem.-
2. A check protector, including--aff'stenn',V a toothed Wheel adjacent the end of saidstem',r and a housing encircling said steun said housing being formed `Witha tapered lend portion. c
' toothed Wheel carried by said' stem, athousing, and a sleeve encircling a part Vof said housing .and stem,
these members. .15,
ing, vhousing and stein, l p
with a slot, said housing being formed with v 3. A check protector including'a stein7 a and being connected to '7 4C. A check protector including a stern, a
toothedWheelcarried by said stein,` a hous-y and a. sleeve partially encircling said said stem being formed an angularly disposed slot and pinsrcarried by saidvsleeve and extendinginto said slots. 5. -Ajcheck protector including a stern, av
andnieans co-operating with said parts with respect to said stern When said sleeve is rotated. v f Y Y 6. A checkprotector including a stein7 a head connected to said stem, spaced ears carried by said stem, a ,Wheel rotatably'carried between said ears, a housing adapted to encloseV said Wheel, and ears, and means co-operatinv with saidv stem and housing for effecting 'a ,lbngitudinal'movement of one of' these elements with respect ,tor the second of the same.
