The handle 1, right angle shank portionQ, curved shank portion 3, angular portion l, cutter supporting portion 5 and cutter portion.6 constitute the principal portions of my dental instrument.
For the sake of. illustration I'have shown the'handle portionl octagonal and extending laterally there from by means of a curve 2* at right angles is the right angled shank portion 2 which extends a short distance, and graduallyftapering,then proviced with a curved shank portion 3, then extendingbackwardly in anguiarfornrn-is the portion 4, which is provided on its extended end with the cutte supporting portion 5 which ext'ends approximately one half the distance from the cutter to the intersection of thex-curve' 3 and it is shaped differently with the different instruments dependent on the particular shape of'the place desired to use any instrument ofthe'particular series upon; These portions" 5 are formed into three definite series consisting of a concave, formon the side from whlch the cutter'proj'ec'ts,'shown best in Figs. 1, 6'and12' of the drawings, another straight, shown best in Figs. 3, 7 and 10 of the drawings, the other convex on the side from which the cutting edge projects shown best in Figs. 5, 8 and 7 13 of the drawing. The cutting portion 6 it will be noted leaves the shank at an obtuse angle 6 which angle is taken from the por- 1 p, ment is in use.
It will also be noted that these sides are rounded at the sides 6' shown best, in Figs. 9, 10 and 11so that they do not injure the gums at theside edges of the cutting portion of the instrument.
The cutting edges of the instruments it will be noted are positioned in conformity with octagonal sides of the handle so that with an instrument with eight sides there are eight differently positioned cutting edges in the series conforming in position with the 'ght sides of the handle 1 as disclosed best in Fig. 2 of the drawings by dotted lines showing the varying positions of the cutting edge and engaging endof the instrument.
Itwill be also noted that the axial line of the handle passes through the shank portion 5 between the cutting edge hand the other point of] contact at a point approximately 'mid'v'vay between the two vpoints of contact as showninithe drawings. 7
Itis obvious that with theconstruction in the various forms that the operator is en abledto reach thesurfaces of all the roots of the teethand removeall foreign substances betweenthe'teeth and the gum or tissue surrounding the teeth and leave the tooth with a smooth polished surface without grooves; that the shank of the instrument is so shaped and arranged and the position of the cutter relative to the handle'is so arranged that the operator can always holdthe instrument in position depending upon the instrument used in the series for, producing the proper re sults without causing grooves.
Having thus described my, invention what I. claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: V
jA dental instrument including, a handle portion, a shankpor'tion offset at a right angle therefrom then curved, then extending backwardly in a straight line on an angle to said handle portion, and a cutting edge positioned onthe'opposite side of the axial line of said handle from the offset portion of the shank whereby the instrument is easily held in balance and therefore easily controlled while in use.
