Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan., 3, 1922.
Application filed October 5, 1920. Serial No. 414,753.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. Lnwrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mas sillon, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Switch, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in switches and more especially to a quick action switch adapted for use in a service entrance and is a division of" my copending application for Entrance switch and service box, filed Oct. 3, 1919, Serial No. 328,104.
The objects of the invention are the provision of a quick action switch for service entrance which is constructed in such a manner that it will stop only at a fully open or fully closed position and which will operate rapidly to throw from the open to the closed position or vice versa.
With these objects in View the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
through the switch showing the same in the opened position.
Fig. 3 is an end view of the switch in the opened position, a portion being broken away for purpose of illustration.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line M, Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a portion of the switch mechanism.
The line wires are attached toa pair of terminals 9 upon the block 2, to which terminals are connected the contactclips 10. The adjacent ends of the switch blades 11 are arranged to engage the contact clips 10, the other ends of said switch blades engaging the contact clips 12 which are attached to the terminals connected with the sockets of the line fuses, these sockets being mounted on the insulated block 2.
The switch is of the quick action type and 1s containedwithin an inverted U-shaped frame 18 provided with the downwardly depending centrally located portions 19 upon each side. The switch blades 11 are carried upon the out-turned oppositely disposed portions 20 of the U-shaped member 21, which U-shaped member is provided with hearing portions 22 journaled in the slots 23 formed in the member 19. A member 24, comprising two L-shaped portions 25 connected at their upper-extremities by a bar 26 is pivoted at its lower ends to the members 19 as indicated at 27, acoil spring 28 connecting the bar 26 with the lower portion of the U-shaped member 21.
The push rod 29 is formed of suitable insulated material and provided with a push button 30 upon its upper end, the lower end of said rod being provided with a yoke 31 having bearing portions 32 j ournaled in suitable apertures 33 in the member 2A. Stops 34 and 35 are provided upon the frame 18 being preferably punched therein, to limit the movement of the U-shaped member 21 in the on and off positions of the switch respectively, the stop 34 being so shaped that it receives the end thrust of the push rod 29 in the on position of the switch.
I claim:
1. A switch comprising a frame, a U- shaped member provided with oppositely disposed bearing portions at its upper end journaled within the frame, switch blades carried upon said bearing portions, an IL shaped member pivoted at one extremity to the lower portion of the frame, the upper end thereof arranged to normally rest at either side of the pivotal point of the U- shaped member, a spring connecting the upper end of the L-shaped member with the U-shaped member, means for limiting the movement of the U-shaped member in either direction and means for throwing the L- shaped member over the pivotal point of the U-shaped member.
2. A switch comprising an inverted U- shaped frame having inwardly disposed stop portions formed at opposite ends thereof, depending bearing portions provided upon opposite sides of the frame, a U-shaped memher having journal portions journaled in said bearings, switch blades carried by said- U-shaped member and arranged to be moved into engagement with each of said stop bearings, a double L-shaped member provided with a cross bar at its upper end, the lower end of said L-shaped member being pivoted upon the bearing members beneath the pivotal point of the U-shaped member, the cross bar thereof arranged to normally rest at either side of the pivotal point of the U- shaped member, a spring connecting said cross bar with the U -shaped member, and
means connected to the L-shaped member intermediate its ends for throwing the same over the pivotal point of the U-shaped memher.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a switch comprising a frame, a U- shaped member pivoted within said frame,
switch blades carried by said U-shaped member, a member pivoted upon the frame at points beneath the pivotal points of the U- shaped member, a cross-bar upon said last named member arranged to normally rest at either side of the pivotal point of the U- shaped member, a spring connecting said cross bar with the U-shaped member, means for limiting the movement of the U-shaped member in either direction, and means for throwing said pivoted member over the pivotal point of the U-shaped member.
In testimony that I claim the above, I
have hereunto subscribed my name.
