To all whom it may concern .Be 1t known that l, JULIAN LAzowsKr, a
citizen of Poland, residing at New Kensington, 1n the county ofv Westmoreland and for anchoring a rail to a tie.
The primary object of the invention resides 11113116 provision of a clamp dev1oe for anchoring a rail to a tie with the clamp device slidably and interloclringly associated withthe tie to be retained in rigid engagement with the rail.
- l/Vith the above general object in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the invention consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts here nafter more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawing and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

Referring more indetail to the accompanying drawing, there is illustrated a tie 1 having a cross seat 2 adjacent each end thereof for supporting a rail 3. The tie, at
each side of the cross seat is provided with arectangular recess 4 having the side thereof adjacent the seat 2 centrally cutaway to provide inwardly directed shoulders 5 havr 1. SSRL clearly shown in rigure l.

While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is: 1 1. A. rail fastener comprising a tie having a cross seat and sockets formed in the tie at opposite sides of the seat, the walls of the sockets adjacent the seat being centrally cut away with the opposite walls of the cut away portion being undercut, a rail engaging clamp having forwardly tapering bevel side walls adapted for engagement with said undercut walls and overlying the base langes of a rail and means for anchoring the rail engaging clamps to the tie, the
' clamps and anchoring means lying flush with the upper surface of the tie and said clamps being detachable from the tie by partial movements toward the outer en'dsof the sockets.
2. A rail fastener comprising a tie having a cross seat and sockets formed in the tie at opposite sides of the seat,'the walls of the sockets adjacent the seat being centrally cut away with; the opposite walls of the cut away portion being undercut, a rail engaging clamp having forwardly tapering bevel side walls adapted for engagement with said undercut walls and overlying the] base flan es of a rail and an anchorin block o t a positioned in the outer end of each socket engaging said clamp for anchoring the same to the tie, the clamps and anchoring means lying flush with the upper surface of the tie and said clamps being detachable from the tie by partial movements toward the outer ends of the sockets.

A rail fastener of the type described comprising a tie having a cross rail seat and a recess at each side of the seat with the walls of'the recess adjacent'the seat being centrally cut away, rail engaging clamps slidably mounted in said seats and interlocking with the forward walls thereof when engaged with a rail, the outer ends of theclamps and recesses being beveled, an anchoring block having beveled side walls posltioned in the outer end of each'seat with the beveled side walls thereof engaging the v beveled walls of the clamp and recess and normally spaced from the bottom'wall of the recess and means for anchoring the block to the tie to cause a binding engagement between said bevel '-walls for moving the clamps in'directions toward the rail for securely holding the same in position, the
clamps and anchoring means lying flush with the upper surface of the tie andsaid clamps being detachable from the tieby partial movements toward the outer ends of the sockets. r a
