In a coldng retort oven, in combinatil tion: a plurality of coking chambers; heatgenerators respectively having their checkerworlc divided into -a plurality of regenerative compartments, each one of which com niunicates individually with a group of combustion fines oi a heating wall, all the regenerative compartments ot a like degree or' remoteness from the side of the battery of an entire group ot regcnerators being connected together; and' means located. cxteriorly of the oven for separately controlling the tlow in each interconnected group of such compartments; substantially as specitied.
