To all whom it may cfm'ccrn:
Be it known that I, RALEIGH J HIMMEL- RIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locomotive Fire Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in locomotive iire boxes and has particular reference 'to fire boxes of `the Gaines type, in which the re box is divided into a fire chamber and a combustion chamber by means of a bridge wall extending across the ire box intermediate the iiue sheet andthe ends of the grates, means being provided in said bridge wall for introducing an additional supply of air.

'One of the chief objects of the Gaines type of iire box is to obtain veconomy in the consumption of fuel and this has heretofore necessitated' the provision ofmanually controlled mechanism for shutting 0E the additionai air. supply when 4the engine is not working. propose to employ mechanism which automatically cuts off the additional air supply when the engine isnot working, thus eiecting a saving in fuel consumption, said means in addition regulating` the volume of additional air supplied in proportion to the demands of the engine, as working conditions vary, as a-result of which better combustion, economical operation and increase in general eiiiciency are obtained.

rThe operation of the damper is' as follows: when the engine is not working, the normal draft through the grates supplies sutlicient air'for the economical maintenance of the tire and there is no draft or suction through the pipe 1.8,0r at least the draft is not sucient to cause the damper to open. When however the engine is working, owing to the partial vacuum created in the iire chamber, the suction through the upright supply pipe 18 will cause the damper to open because of the unbalanced areas a and @the degree to which the damper opens being dependent entirely upon the degree of suction which in turn is dependent upon the particular work- 18 will be in direct proportion to the varying demands of the engine. Thus, Whether the engine is idle or is working, an' is supplied only in accordance with the demands, as a direct result of which at all times better combustion and more economical consumption of fuel are obtained.
It will of course be understood that my invention is applicable to other types ofire boxes than the specific one shown, my invention being directed to introduction ofthe' i clination of the damperb when fully opened being greater than the angle of rest. I claim 1. tion of its interlor passage in line with`said inlet and an enlarged portion oiiset with respect to said inlet, a damper, and means for pivoting said 'damper at a point removed from an edge so as to provide unequal areas,
at each side of the pivot line, the greater area being opposite the offset portion and the lesser area being opposite the inlet, said damper being adapted to increase the effecc tive opening through theinlet as the locomo-l tive is worked harder.

greater areal being adapted toswing inwardly toward said inlet and the lesser area t0 swing outwardly away `from the-inlet whereby accumulated deposit may be discharged and air may be admitted,f said damper tending to increase theopening as the locomotive is worked harder.
