UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICEQ HORACE A. MEARS, OF ROOKFORD, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, SMITH SALIS- BURY, AND BENJAMIN SANBORN, OF PEOATONIOA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN AGRICULTURAL BOILERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,213, dated June 24, 1873,' application filed 4 March 29, 1873.
To all whom tt may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORACE A. MEARS, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heaters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a transverse section through the tank and heater, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the heater only.
The invention relates to an improved heater for cooking food, boiling water, 85o., for stock upon a farm, and is of that class in which the heater is set intoa tub or barrel which contains the food or water.
The class of heater as heretofore constructed was provided with a long draftflue and smoke-stack, and the heater was entirely submerged, the draft-due and smoke-stack only being above the water.
The objection to the heater as above de` scribed was that the meal or food to be cooked would stand or settle after it was stirred upon the top surface of the heater, and was not in as good condition for stock as it would have been had it not come in contact with the heater, and it was also necessary to clean the heater before it could be removed from the barrel. My invention is constructed in such manner as to remedy the above defects, and will be more fully understood by reference to the drawing, in Which- A is a shell or casing made cylindrical in form, which gives a large heating-surface, and at the same time not occupying as much space in the tank as if made square or oblon g. B is the draft-flue, and B1 the smoke-stack. The sides of the shell or casing are provided on the side at which the draft-flue is inserted with projecting lips or flanges a a, riveted or otherwise secured to the side, the draft-flue being free to slide up and down in said flanges. The draft-flue is made concave in form, the flanges da allowing said ilue to expand or contract as a. greater or less amount of heat is generated in the heater. The flanges a a permit the flue to be removed when burned out and the substitution of a new one, which, with this construction, can be done at a small expense. The draft-line may be perforated at diierent points on its surface to admit of the passage of air at said points, but the construction shown is preferred. The smokestack B1 extends from the top of the heater to within a short distance of the bottom, as shown at b1, Fig. 1, and is inclosed by a casing, B2, which extends from the bottom of the heater to a point about the same distance from the top as the ilue is from the bottom. O is a topor cover hinged to one side of the shell, and covering the entire surface, except the space occupied by the draft-flue and smoke-stack. D is a handle, one on each side ofthe heater, for carrying it from place to place or removing it from the barrel.
The operation is as follows: The lire is built in the chamber A. The air passing down the line B creates a draft, which causes the fire to kindle; the smoke passes upward through the opening left at the top of the casing B2; thence down through a ilue, b2, formed by the casing and smoke-stack, to apointat b1; thence up the smoke-stack and out at the top.
By this construction the heat from the smoke is all utilized before it leaves the smoke-stack, which, if the smoke were allowed to pass immediately out from a flue or opening in the top or cover, would be wasted.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, within the case A, of the lire-chamber A', draft-flue B, and smoke-lines Bl b2, all constructed, arranged, and operating as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 14th day of March, 1873.
HORACE A. MEARS.
