Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 3, 19 22.
Application filed December 13, 1319, Serial No. 344,575. Renewed June 2, 1921. Serial No. 474,527.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT E. MOOAULEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrapers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference, being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of refer-.
once marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in scrapers or levelers of the kind. used'to grade and level dirt, and preferably drawn by a tractor connected thereto by a rigid drawbar.
The principal object of the invention is to devise a scraper which besides scraping the dirt, embodies features enabling it to transport a load of dirt to any desired point for dumping without scraping the ground over which it is being transported.
In all scrapers constructed to-day, as far as I am aware, no provision is made for carrying dirt any distance, and if the dump ing ground is far from the area being scraped or leveled, by the time the scraper has reached the dump, the majority of the dirt presumed to be carried thereby has been lost by reason of the fact that the scraper has no bottom, and hence with the jarring or bumping motion along the ground, the back or scraping plate of the scraper leaves the ground and allows the dirt to escape thereunder.
In my improved scraper, I have eliminated the defect cited above, by combining in one, the features of a scraper plate and a carrying bowl, and providing means for instantly changing the functioning of this icnber from a scraper to a carrying bowl or vice versa.
A further object of the invention is to so arrange the control means that it may readily be operated by the driver of the tractor from his seat thereon, without physical exertion on his part, by manipulation of the tractor itself, as will be seen hereinafter,
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be ex'ceedinglyefl'ective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by ,means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the scraper.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof showing the same in scraping position.
Fig. '3 is a sectional elevation showing the scraping member in position to transport a load.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotesa pair of vertical and suitably spaced plates, forming the sides of the. scraper, to which are secured ground bearing runners or shoes 2. v
At the upper and lower corners of the rear end of the plates are bolts 3, on which are spacer pipes or sleeves 4c.
At the forward end, substantially halfway up, is a transverse beam 5 extending between the plates land rigidly secured thereto. j
Substantially central of the plates is a shaft 6 covered by a strong sleeve 7, on which are turnably mounted a pair of spaced bosses 8 to which are secured beams 9 projecting forward of the plates 1 andbeing secured to the beam 5. These beams converge somewhat at their forward ends, and have cross bars 10 secured thereto, which take the strain of and are connected to the drawbar v11 of the tractor pulling the device.
Secured on the sleeve 7 are a plurality of bosses 12 from which extend rearwardly spiders or webs 13, whose outer edges are concentric with the shaft 6. l
To such outer edges is secured a plate 14; extending between the plates l, this platev being substantially semicircular and formingat once a scraper plate and a carrying bowl. I
The radius of curvature of this plateis greater than the distance from the shaft-6 to the ground for a purpose which will appear.
Fixed to the sleeve 7 is a lever 15 having a spring pressed catch or pawl 16 thereon, of theusual construction, which engages with a ratchet quadrant 17 secured both to V the beam 5 and to the sleeve 4, the teeth 17 of which quadrant point toward the rear.

' While this specification sets'torth in de tail the pres'ent andjpreferred constructionj the driver of the tractor.
I ;A light cable or rope 18 is attached to the actuating handle 16 of the pawl, which cable projects forward to within reach of In operation, the scraper V sitioned as shown in Fig. 2, so that thelower or scraping edge thereof is somewhat below the level of the shoes2. This distance may rbe regulatcdiby movement of the "lever pr or to commencing the job; When a suf-" V ficient'quantity ofdirt has been scr aped to, constitute aflload, the tractor is backed up 7 somewhat, pushing back on its rigid draw bar. This causesthe body or frame of the scraper tofback up, while the scraperfmember 14, being in contact with the ground re-,
mains relatively stationary, and 7 being ,fixed on theturn-able sleeve 7, assumes ahorizontal position as shown in Fig. 3 the'lever 15 015 course likewise moving and taking up 'a new position on the ,quadrant 17. Then when the tractor'is moved forward, the
" rant teeth 17 member 14, now a bowl, drags on the ground, and transports a full load of dirt to whatever point desired, the esetting of the quadpreventing the pawl 16- from movement: out of'the' tooth in which it is held, and so preventing movement ot'the lever'and consequently'o f the bowl.
a driver of the tractor, while the latter to ride on ing the dirt to escape under the plate 14;.
When the scraper has arrived at the place where it "is desired to dump the load, the still keeping-the latter in forward motion, pulls the cable 18, thus freeing the lever 15 and bowl '14: con nected thereto, and allowing the latter to rock and upset and so dump its load. JlVith thismovement, the lever 15 will descend and bump against the beam 5, in which position the. lower edge of the scraper plate 14 is above the level of the shoes 2, permitting the ground'and allow- In this latter and device may be used high spots, the shoes plates: bearing on the adjacent positions, the to level or scrape off or runners of the side ground.
7 From the foregoing description itwill be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfills the object of,
the'inventio'n as set forthherein.
r the device, still in practice such devia tions from such detail ,may be resorted to as do not form adeparture from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the; appended to be attached to the claims, 7 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :V-'- r f 1. A scraper including a frame ad 7 rigiddrawbar ofa tractor, a concave scraper plate turnably mounted in the frame,
