To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. BALLn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented cer-v tain new and useful improvements in Reamers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to reamers and more particularly to reamers of the type comprising a longitudinally-channeled head, and cutting blades detachably engaging in the channels, the bottoms of the channels and of the blades having a gradual inclination to the axis of the head, whereby the cutting diameter of the tool may be varied by a longitudinal adjustment of the blades in their channels.
lt is an object of the invention to so form the channels and the blades of such a reamer that the blades will always seat securely in the bottoms of the channels, preventing any accumulation ofV dust or dirt under the blades and consequent inaccuracies in adjustment.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a positive and eiiicient means for clamping the blades against any longitudinal movement.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing.| wherein- Figure l is a view in side elevation and partial section of the reamer;

In these views, the reference character A designates a substantially cylindrical reamer head having the adjustable cutting blades B respectively engaging in longitudinal channels of said head with the bottoms of the blades and of the channels correspondingly inclined to the axis of said head, as is common in the art. Such conditions have been eliminated in the present invention byproviding one wall of each channel with an under-cut bevel, as indicated at B', and forming one laterall face of each blade with a corresponding bevel. -The other lateral faces B2 of the blades and channels are preferably perpendicular to the bottoms of the latter. For simultaneously adjusting the blades, there may be provided the usual means comprising the nuts C and and D engaging the rear portion D of the head A, which portion is threaded and of reduced diameter, the nut D being adapted to bear upon the rear end faces of the blades. To restrain the blades against forward movement after having been properly adjusted, there is associated with each blade one or more clamping devices, each comprising a clamping member E engageable with the blade face E2, and a clamping screw F passing through the member E and entering the head A at a gradual inclination to the face B2, as is best seen in Figure 2. The member E is of a disc or button shape planed ofi at one side, as indicated at E', to form a bearing face for enging the blades. The member E is engageable in a corresponding recess E2 in the member A so as to be substantially flush with said member when exercising its clamping function. As may be seen in Figure 3, the head E and the recess receiving said head are so shaped as to prevent the head from turning even when the adjacent blade B is removed from the head. Thus, the bearing face E of the clamping member is always in proper position for engagement with the blades, avoiding any necessity for rotative manipulation of said clamping member either before or after a longitudinal adjustment of the blades.
It is a further feature of the invention that the clamping member E is positively disengaged from the adjacent blade when the screw F is loosened, and that the clamping member and its screw are permanently connected as a unit. To accomplish both of these results the screw F is formed just below its head with an annular groove and a complementary annular groove G is formed internally of the member E. The grooves F and G having been registered one with the other, a wire H is forced into said groove through an opening H in the face E of the clamping member, said wire being made to substantially embrace the screw, as is clearly sho-Wn in Figure 8. Thus, the screw is free to turn independently of the clamping member but may not be longitudinally disengaged therefrom. To pre vent locking of the blades B against out- Ward movement due to engagement of their beveled faces with the corresponding faces B of the channels, the Width of the blade is made constant from front to back in any A plane parallel to the bottom of the blade,
as, for example, that which is shown in Fi re 4.
lhile the invention has been particularly described in its application to an adjustable reamer, it is to be understood that adjustable taps and any boring tools or cutters emcess to said channels, and a Wire engaging in said channels establishing a permanent connection between said screw and clamping member.
