Be it known that I, HENRY L. VVYGERT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Denvulcanizers in which provision is made for conserving the heat or steam which has been generated during the vulcanizing process, pending the completion of repairs to the usual safety disk employed in connection with such vulcanizers, it being understood that the safety disks are provided to resist pressure below that which would prove dangerous, and the said disks being adapted to be fractured or blown upon the development of abnormal pressure within the vulcanizing machine. I
It is an object of this invention to provide novel means actuated by the pressure released after the fracture of a disk for inter rupting the supply of gases or other fuel which'may be used in heating the vulcanizer; the said device also contemplating the provision of novelmeans whereby a safety disk may be applied to replace the fractured one without the loss ofthe steam charge which has been developed during the vulcanizing process. By reason of this invention, therefore,the vulcanizing process continues while the disk is being replaced, and
p the steam within the vulcanizer is not'reduced in temperature to an appreciable extent during the shorttime required for replacing the safety disk under this method. Heretofore, with many of the vulcanizers in common use, the fracture of the safety disk results in the discharge of the steam within the vulcanizer to a degree which interrupts the curing of the rubber, and as the process is carried on usually over a period of more than an hour, the time consumed prior to the blowing of the safety disk has been a complete loss, whereas by the present invention, the curing process is continued pending the repairing, as has been stated.

In these, drawings 5 denotes a conventional head of a vuleanizer havinga threaded nipple 6 to be secured to the body of the vulcanizer, the said nipple having a pas sage therethrough :as at 7, terminating in branch ducts 8 and 9, one of which leads to a blow-off valve 10 whichmay 'be employed when the charge is to be exhausted from the vulcanizer and the other of which is in communication with a coupling 11 in the nature of a valve casing having a valve 12 therein, which may be turned to establish communication through the coupling when the port 13 of the plug registers with. the passage 14:- in the coupling, or to interrupt communication through. the said pasage'when the valve is in the position shown in Fig.1; The coupling 11 has a nipple l5.threa'ded into the head and a seat 16 in its outer end for the safety disk 17, which has the characteristics heretofore indicated, the said disk being held on its seat by an apertured plug 18 which has a reduced portion 19 fitting in the seat of the disk and bearing thereon. A pipe 20 is connected to the outer end of the coupling 11 and it preferably has a bore 21 of the size of the opening through the coupling, said pipe having an enlarged bore 22' at its outer portion where it is connected to or merges with a fuel supply pipe 23; The fuel supply ipe has a connection 24 with thesource of fuel supply and a jet or nozzle 25 for delivering the fuel to be burned during the vul- 'canizing process.
There is, in the present embodiment of the invention, an inclined valve seat 26 in the pipe 20 atthe'junotion of the reduced and larger bore, and this valve seat has a valve 27 normally lying on it which interrupts communication between the small and large channels in the pipe 20. The valve 27 isoscillatably mounted as on a pivot 28, and it has an arm 29 which oscillates under the influence of the valve. .When the parts are in normal positions, the valve 12 will be in po- "sition to establish communication through the passage 14 of the coupling, the pressure being sustained by the safety disk 17, under normalconditions of use. 7 Should the pressure within the vulcanizer become abnormal, the disk will be fractured 1 and hence, the steam pressure will tend to lift the valve 27, and as the pipe 20 has a valve seat vtherein to be engaged by the valve 27, the escape of'steam will be prevented.
