A CORPORATION OF DELA- EIETEOD OF PRODUCING CARBON-BLACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
Application filed October 5, 1920. Serial No. 414,891.
prodilcing carbon black in whlch carbon 1s liberated by the imperfect combustion and decomposition of a hydrocarbon compound, preferably in some fluid form, as for 1n- 16 stance hydrocarbon gas or vapor, the carbon so liberated being deposited upon a suitable plate or surface from which it is subsequently removed by'scraping or otherwise.
My invention will be particularly de scribed in connection with the process of producing carbonblack from the unburned and decomposed portion of a hydrocarbon gas or vapor fed through a suitable burner suitably housed or inclosed, from which its application to the production of carbon black and other hydrocarbon fluids will be readily understood.
It has been proposed to produce carbon blackby burning natural gas hydrocarbon vapors or other allied or analogous products or substances in an incomplete supply the burner or burners bein for that purpose usually located in a sultable housing or inclosure and being arranged so that the flame will impinge upon a suitable plate or surface upon which the carbon black collects. In this operation the carbon collected is not the direct result of the combustion of..-the hydrogen through 7 union with the oxygen supplied from the air or otherwise to maintain the flame but is the direct result of the decomposition of the unburned portion of the hydrocarbon by the heat of the flame or burning portion of the material and will result primarily from the inner part of the flame or jet where the oxygensupply is low but where the heat is suflicient to break up the hydrocarbons present.
The aim of my present invention is to I so conduct the above operation of produclng carbon black that a more effective or extensive decomposition and deposit of carbon black may invention conslsts essentially in protecting be secured to which end my the carbon producing flame or jet by a gaseous screen or curtain preferably surrounding the same and adapted to exclude or cut off the supply of oxygen, said screen bein preferably a flame of any burning materiafl. For convenience a hydrocarbon may be supplied to maintain the said protective flame or screen.
By this means I secure a greater decomposition of the hydrocarbons owing to the lack of oxygen and the presence of heat from the protecting screen.
My invention consists also in the construction of burner adapted particularly for carrying on the improved process as will be,
hereinafter more particularly described.
Figure 1 of the drawing shows in vertical section a typical form of apparatus adapted for practicing my. invention. I
Fig. 2 is a plan of the burner and shows the relation of the carbon producing and surrounding protective flames to one another. 1 is the plate or body upon which the carbon black is deposited. 2 is the body of the burner and 3 the hollow center to which the hydrocarbon in gaseous or liquid form may be supplied for egress through suitable burner tips or jets. In the particular form of my invention shown there is a central jet or jets 4 supplying the inner carbon producing flame and ing a flow by which a surrounding flame or flames may be produced to form a screen limiting the access of oxygen to the central flame and also to furnish heat assisting in the decomposition of the hydrocarbon sup-- plied by the inner jet. Obviously the burner may be of any desired size as may be deemed convenient or desirable and any number of inner carbon producing jets maybe maintained as likewise any number of outer or protective jets or flames.
Also as will be obvious the flames will be graduated or adjusted by the size or number of the jet orifices or by any other de- 5 is a jet or jets furnish I sired expedient, to produce the effect described.
In addition each burner of the plant may have an outer protective wall 6 adapted to prevent access of oxygen in undesirable or unnecessary amount to the burner. The building or inclosure in which the burners or burners and the collecting plate are housed may be of any desired form or construction as well understood in the art.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The herein described improved method of producing carbon black from a flame of hydrocarbon consisting in conducting the operation while said flame is surrounded by a protective gaseous screen adapted to exclude oxygen.
2. The herein described improvement in producing carbon black from a flame of hydrocarbon consisting in burning hydrocarbon'behind a supplemental flame forming a protective gaseous screen adapted to exclude oxygen from the black producing flame.
3. The herein described improvement in producing carbon black from a hydrocarbon flame consisting in maintaining a protective flame forming a gaseous screen exterior to and surrounding said flame and adapted to oms? A burner for carbon black having a jet or jets producing a flame formingfan oxygen excluding screen surrounding 'the carbon producing jet and an exterior protective wall.
