IMPRQVEMENT IN cLurcHss.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
Dcembefso, ism.
140;; as', dated une 24,1873; application :ned
Beit known thatwe, WiLLARD KNIGHT and NATHANLEL W. LEwIs, both of the. city of Bridgeport, in'- thecounty of Fairfield and State of Connection@ have invented a-certain',
new and useful Improvement in Clutch-P ulleys;
f and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereef, reference being had to the accompanying drawing `which forms part of this specification.
`Our invention consists 'in the combination. of an adjustable head with the operating sleeve, link, and dog of a clutch-pulley, where'- vby any wear or inaccuracy in the holdl of the dog upon the inner ciroumferen ce. of the ange or rim of the pulley may be easily and quickvly compensated for and remedied;
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 isa, vertical central section of two pulleys' mount-V on the same-shaft for driving in opposite Vdi'- rections, showing our improvement in VYthe clutching mechanism applied thereto. Fig. 2;
is a vertical section takenV on the plane of the line w Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is 4also va vertical sec- ;tion on the plane of the line y y, Fig. 1.
v 'A Bv designate -two pulleys, mountedon f the sameshaft S. The clutchingdogs, in
both cases, operate upon the inner circumferenceof the rims of the pulleys. In the drawing theleft-hand pulley, A, is a friction-pull ley, and the right-hand pulley, B, a ratchetpulley; 4and in the former case two .hinged or' pivoted dogs, C'G, are caused to press against the inner circumt'erenceof the rim ofsaid pulley A, so as to operate in a wellknown manner; and in the latter case twotoothed dogs, C C', are caused to engage with teeth formed upon the inner face of the rim of said pulley .13. D designates a sleeve, which is fitted to ward each end. This sleeve lD carries four adjustable heads, F F, two at each end, and
*I l arranged on opposite sidesof the sleeve. A
link or rod, G, is pivoted at one end to one of adjustable heads F. These adjustable heads are each provided with an elongate-d slot pass slot there passesa screwd, which enters or screws into the sleeve D head securely in place.
be set up closer Ato the rim of the Wheel, and this we accomplish, with respect toeach head F, by a screw, f, which enters a collar f rmed ting 'against the e d o f the adjustable head F. New, to adjust th dogs C C up 'closer to the rims of the'wheels A B, it is merely necessary to loosen the screw d, which Vpasses through the elongated slot in the head F, so asto permit the sliding of the said head F, and such saasilyfand accurately accomplished by screwing outward the propelling-screw f, and thus i We find it desirable to. use springs of any suitable constructionf-say, spiral .springs g, (one end of each being attached to a dog, and` to ke p the dog from striking against thepuling the pulley. A crossbelt employed on one opposite direction to the other pulley.
cause the links or rods G tostraighten, and press the dogs-G against the inner periphery of the flange or rim of the wheel A and lock it, so as-to cause it to revolve the. shaft S in one direction; but if the lever E be pushedto nectingrods G, will cause the toothed dogs C to engage'with the teeth formed on the inside this wheel to revolve, and, therefore, if a crossbelt be upon this pulley, the shaft will be re- Which it is revolved by the other pulley.
shown, the dogs can be caused to press closely up to the rim of the wheel, by reason of the straighteningof the links or rods G and hence Passiva* revien.) i
,the dogs, and at the other to one of the said' ving vertically through them, and through such and holds the said 1t ofttimesoccurs that the 'friction-dogfor l i toothed dog, as the case ,may be,requires to v on the sleeve D, the head of said screw ibutmoving or adjusting of the head can' be nicely, I i
the dogs will, of course, be set closer to the the other end to a nut or collar on. the shaft)l ley w en the said dog is not in use for lock'- of the pulleys will cause it to revolve in an It will therefore 'be understood that, if the lever E be pushed to the left the sleeve willthe right, the s1eeve,'through the links or conof the iiange or rim ofthe wheel B and cause' volvedl in an opposite direction to that in` It will be seen that, by the constructionl :i very reliable and durable clutch-pulley ie obtained. y
We have showuour improvement applied to two pulleys on a. shaft, but, of course, it; is obvious that, by dispensing with a portion# say, one -half-of the device, the improvementfwill operate equally as Well with a. singie pulley. l Y, Win56 we claim as our invention, and desire to eeeure by Lettere Patent, iik- 1.: The combination of the adjustable heads F emi propellingeserewaf (two or more) with links or rods G, sleeve D, adjustable head F,'
propelling-serew f, and operatiiigdeveri, eubten'tiellyas and for the purposes herein specified.
