PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR lHAIIZFIIZJIWIELL, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ADJUSTABLE AUTO-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 27, 1921.
Application iled May 14, ,1921. Serial No. 469,415.
To all whom t may concer/n:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR HALLIWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahogaand State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Auto-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to lamps for automobiles, and has for its object to provide an adjustable lamp which will be fastened on the upper side of a fender, preferably over the left front wheel of an automobile,r the purpose being to illuminate the road at the left side of the machine so that distances-can be readily gaged in passing cars at night. The device is also readily detachable so that it can be used as a trouble-lamp when desired.
The invention will be better understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation of the lamp shown applied to a fender. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the lamp attached to the fender. Fig. '3 is a bottom, plan view. Fig. 4 is a section on the line of Fig. 2. j
In the drawings, fthe fender of an automobile is indicated at 20. Fastened to the upper side of this fender is a bracket l0 which carries a clamp consisting of two jaws 8 and 9 connected by a bolt 11 and a nut 12. These jaws grip a rod 7 which can be adjusted lengthwise and also angularly, by
Sav-loosening the clamp, to vary the position 'and` angle of the lamp. The front end of the rod 7 is fixed in a boss 3 projecting from the backfof e lump casing 1. This casing is triangular in shape, being closed at the top and sides, and being provided at the bottom with a glass 6, and the interior of the casing may be coated with any suitable reflecting surface the construction being such that light will be directly downwardly and outwardly to one side, although the direction of projection may be varied by turning the casing to various angles. The lamp bulb is indicated at 5, with a'socket connection at 4 to a cord, the lamp being held in a bore in a tubular boss 2 at the back of the casing.
This construction when appliedV to the fender of an automobile, especially the leftL front fender, will illuminate the ground in `advance of and beside vthe left front wheel tom, one side wall of the casing havingI a tubular boss forming a socket, a lamp in said socket, a rod secured to the said wall beside said socket, and a clamp in which the rod is held. l f v j p In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.`
ARTHUR HALLIWELL.
