Description

W. G. MASON.
BOTTLE 0R CAN WASHING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY II, 192]- Patented Dec. 20, 1921.
avvuamtoz MY/i & N080 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. MASON, 015' DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR '10 JOHN W. LADD COMPANY,
OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
BOTTLE 0R CAN WASHING MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. MASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle or Can Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bottle or can washing machines.
The main objects of this invention are:
To provide in a bottle or can washing machine of the spray type, that is, in which the bottles or cans are carried through the machine in an inverted position to be washed and sterilized by means of jets of water and steam projected from below, with means for positioning the bottle holders or cases.
Further objects, and objects relatin to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompan ing drawing, forming a part of this speci cation, in which:
Figure l is a fragmentary front perspective view of a bottle washing machine embodyin my invention.
Fig. I is a fragmentary view partially in central longitudinal section, as on line 2-2 of Fig. III, of a bottle or can washing machine embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. III is a detail plan view of the front end of the machine.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, the frame 1 is of suitable construction to support the operative parts and the housing 2.
I provide a way, designated generally by the numeral 3, and comprising a series of rollers 4 on each side on which the case-like bottle or can holders 5, is adapted to travel. These holders are adapted to support the bottles 6 in an inverted position, the holders being open at their tops and bottoms.
he washing heads 7 are provided with a series of nozzles 8, the heads being positioned below the ways so that as the bottles are Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2d, 1921.
1921. Serial No. 468,512.,
carried along in the holders they are brought into alinement with the nozzles 8, so that jets of water are projected into the bottles and usually also jets of steam for sterilizing.
The holders are pushed along with a step by step movement by the operator who places the holders upon the conveyor and pushes them along to operative relation with the washing heads. To facilitate this positioning, I provide the positioning hook 9, which is pivoted at 10 to face upwardly and engage the rear walls of the holders, as shown in Figs. I and II. The hook is weighted at 11 so that its engaging end is normally held upward. The hook has an inclined portion 12 which projects into the path of the holders so that as a holder is pushed on to the way the hook is disengaged from the preceding holder, the series of holders being then pushed along by the operator until the hook engages the rear wall of the holder last introduced, which insures that the holders are stopped in proper position relative to the washing means.
I have illustrated and described only such parts of a bottle washing machine as seems to me desirable for disclosing a practical embodiment of my improvements, certain of the parts being shown conventionally as the structural details thereof form no part of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a washing machine of the class described, the combination of a way and washing means associated therewith, of case-like holders traveling on said way, and means for positioning said holders in operative relation to the washing means as the holders are pushed along the way comprising an upwardly facing pivoted hook adapted to successively engage the rear walls of the holders and having an inclined portion projecting into the path of the holders so that as a holder is pushed onto the way the hook is released from the preceding holder, the hook being weighted to hold it normally in engaging position.
2. In a washing machine of the class described, the combination of a way and washing means associated therewith, of holders traveling on said way, and means for positioning said holders in operative relation to the washing means as the holders are pushed along the way comprising a hook adapted to hand and seal in the presence of two witsuccessively engage the holders and havm a nesses.
portion projectin into the nth of the ho I WILLIAM G. M ASON' {LS1 ers so that as a ho der is us ed onto the vyay H M 5 the hook is released mm the precedmg Witnesses.
holder. S. A. DRAPEB,
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my Gno. F. HOFFMAN;
