Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26?, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, Bnoons BUTLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maplevalley, in the county of Oconto and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Container Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to container holders, and more particularly to a holder for supporting milk pails and the like.
It is an object of the invention to provide a holder of this character capable of supporting a container in spaced relation to the ground, and "for gripping the container to prevent accidental disengagement thereof from the holder.
It is another object of the invention to provide a holder of this character which is adjustable to accommodate various sizes of pails.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a holder of this character embodying a plurality of pail supporting members, certain of said members being provided with jaws for engagement with the pail, while the remaining supporting member is pro vided with means for engagement of the pail with the jaws for adjustment of the supporting members.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a holder of this character including a plurality of supporting members adjustable with respect to the adjacent member, and arranged to be detachably connected to each other.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a container holder constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention,
Fig. 2 is a top plan View,
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the primary supporting member, and
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of one of the secondary supporting members.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates a holder embodying a supporting member 6, having a supporting leg 7 formed on and projecting in angular relation to the end 8 of said member, one end portion of said leg pro ecting beyond the upper face of the supporting member. The opposite end portion 9 of said member is enlarged and ofi'set and provided with a plurality of transversely extending ridges 10 which cooperate with each other to form recesses 11, said recesses extending laterally of the end portion 9. 'An eye 12 is formed on the extremity of the enlarged end portion to permit the device to be supported when not in use, and also to serve as a finger piece in order to properly position the holder.
The remainder of the holder comprises supporting members 13 and 14., the supporting member 13 being offset at its intermediate portion 15 so as to dispose one end portion of said member below the opposite end portion, the last mentioned end portion including a supportingleg 16 which is reinforced by a brace member 17. The end portion 18 of the supporting member 13 is provided with a slot which extends from the intermediate portion to the extremity of said end, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The opposite end portion of the supporting member 13 includes an extension 19, which is extended back upon the member 13 to form a container engaging aw.
The structure of the supporting member 14 is similar to the structure of the supporting member 13, the slotted end portion of the member 1 1 being adapted to extend over the slotted end portion of the members 13 so that the slots in said members register. The overlapping portions of the members 13 and 14 are adapted to be disposed in one of the recesses 11 of the supporting member 6, each of said recesses having an opening formed therein for the reception of a bolt or like fastening means 20, said fastening means being arranged to extend through the registered slots of the members 13 and 14. By this means, the members 13 and 14 may not only be adjusted toward and away from each other according to the size of the pail, but the length of the supporting member 6 may also be increased or decreased by disposing the overlapping end portions of the supporting members 13 and 1 1 in the desired recess of the supporting member 6. This novel structure eliminates the necessity of a fourth vThe leg 7v of the supporting member 6 is provided with a leaf spring 21 which is secured to the upper end portion of the leg 7-, one end of said spring extending beyond the extended upper end portion of the leg. A clamp 22 including a finger piece 23, is secured to the upper end portion of the spring -21, the lower face of the clamp 22 being adapted to extend over the extended end por tion of the leg 7 It will be noted that the inner face 24 of the clamp member is substantially rounded so as to permit unobtructed movement of the clamp toward the container. In applying the container it is only necessary to engage the lower portion of one side of the container with the jaws of the, members 13v and 14 and then force the pail downwardly against the rounded face of the clamp 22,'thereby causing the pail to be urged toward the supporting members 13 and l lso that accidental disengage- V ment is impossible. The supporting members 13 and 1d are curved longitudinally and when connected to the supportingmember 6 extend "toward the leg of said supporting member. The offset portions of said supporting member permit the means of connection of the supporting members to each other to be dsposed below the surface otthe supporting members with which the container is engaged so that there is no danger of the container being positioned unevenly on the holder. i
7 From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides anovel form of container holder having a variety of adjustments which readily renders the device capable for use in co'nnectionwith all kinds of pails or like containers and wherein the weight of the pail'is substantially supported by a three legged holder. The center of gravity is disposed to one side of the connection of the supporting members to each other, in view of the fact that V 'the center 01'? the pail is positioned substantially oyer the intermediate portion of the supportmg member 6. The holder is particularly adapted for use in milking, as, it
' holds the milk pail the desired distance from tilting of the pail is also eliminated. Itis the'ground, so thatsplashing of the milk is impossible; At the same time, accidental.
P ment and use of the holder, as minor permit use of the device for various purposes. I v H i What is claimed is:
1. A container holder of the character described comprising supporting members, each of said members having a leg extending from one end, the opposite endot' one of said members being enlarged and provided with a plurality of laterally extending channels, the opposite end, portions of the remaining members being slotted and adapted to overlap each other substantially in parallel relation, said overlapping portions being disposed in one of said channels, and means for connecting said members to each other. a
