To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1,. JEPTHA M. NEWTON, a
4citizen ot the United States,'l residing at Dothan, in the county oli' Houston and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tension'ing and Pulling Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to Vbe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willeir able others skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved device-1used for pulling stalled automobiles or other vehicles out ofa mud hole, lor stretching fence wires orifences of the woven wire type, orV ior any other similar use.
One object of the invention is to provide a puller or stretcher of the type specified which is so constructed .that the'pulling or stretching may be done with a minimum amount ot labor and without. danger ot vthe grapple slipping `and releasing they fence wires or article being pulled.
Another object of the invention `is to so construct this device thatthe amount of pullv or stretch accomplished at one setting up oi the device may bel controlled.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this device that `it will be very simple in operation andveryeasy to set up.
Another object of the invention is toV so construct this device that it maybe easily and cheaply produced and to further so con struct it .that it may be strong yand durable and not liable to break. i

It should be noted that grooves are so vcut that they will start from the lower portion of one of the Vopenings and Aterminate at theupper portion oit the adjoining or following opening vor` in other words that these grooves decrease in depth from one opening to another. Since the grooves decrease in depth from one openingtothe other the straight cut edge 17 of the head 15 may Obtain a rni grip upon the ladder sections when the head is vresting in one of openings `but may-move easily out of the openings to a second open-l ing through engagement of the inclined or cam 'edge`16 with the' sloping grooves. It is therefore only necessary to oscillate thek lever in order to exert a pulling force to withdraw an automobile from a mud'hole, stretch a fence wire, or woven Wire fencing or toV exertV a pulling action upon an obj ect if it is-desired to pull or stretch.v After the automobileor other object has been moved as far as per- -mittedloy the vhooks reaching the end ofthe Y ladder section the anchor post may be removed and again driven intothe ground at a.
