H. ORTGIES.
SEL'F LOADING PISTOL.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 1, 1919.

new w rn of EMU??? essm y- I v 4 SELF-LOADING mm.
Application diled April 1,
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH ORTGIES, manufacturer, citizen of theGerman Republic, residing at No. 3O 'Cyriakstrasse, in the city of Erfurt,Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self- Loading Pistols, of which the following is a specification. I
The present invention relates to an arrangement for fixing the covers to the handle of pistols, and in particular of automatic pistols with which the magazine is disposed V in the said handle. With the said arrangement the covers are secured in a reliable manner without the need of screws or studs, and they may be readily'reinoved or be refit-ted after the magazine has been removed, without, however, there being a danger of the covers droppingofl accidentally. I
In the accompanying drawing the invention is illustrated as applied to an automatic pistol.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through the pistol. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same, the rear wall of the handle having been removed. Fi 3 is a cross section onthe line i A-B in Fig. 1 and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the means for securing the. covers. Fig. 5 i
is an inside view of a cover. I
The rear wall 2 of the. cavity 3 within the handle or butt 1 of the pistol intended to receivethe magazine 4 is cut out ina certain manner to allow of fitting a bolt ,5, which serves to hold the two covers 12 lying on the two sides of the handle 1. V This bolt 5 is formed in the embodiment shown by a lever pivoted at its lowerend'on a horizontal pin 6; the upper end of this lever has two laterally projecting ribs 7 formed at its side edges which extend for a certain :dis-
.tance through the wall of the cavity 3 into the latter. p 7
The bolt 5 is forced inwardlyby means of a spring 8 bearing against thesaid bolt and the rear wall of the handle, or, as in the V embodiment shown, against the upper end 7 of the lever 9 which ispivoted centrally on a;
pin 10, the lower part of which lever 11 V forms the magazine holder. With this em- 1 V purpose, by simultaneously acting on the bodiment thespring thus fulfilsa double the front edge dovetailed andbears against a corresponding" after the i Specification of Letters Patent. magazine holder and on the bolt for the covers. p 1
Each of the covers 12 (Figs. 3 and 5) which areremoved in Fig. 1, is provided on its 'innersurface with a projection 13, 14: of which is beveled or edge of the handle. On the rear edge of this projectlon is a recess 15 into which engages the respective rib 7of the bolt 6.
From the descriptionlof the embodiment shown it is evident that the two covers are secured in a perfect manner, when the ribs 7 of the bolt engage in the recesses-15, and are held in such engagement by means of the springs 8. When the magazine 4 is in position, the bolt 5 is inaccessible. For removing the covers it is therefore necessary to first remove the magazine from the handle, whereupon a backward pressure is exerted by aid of a rod orsome other tool'on the bolt, so that the spring is compressed and I the locking ribs are disengaged from the recesses ofthe projections inside the covers. The covers are fitted ma similar manner,
bolt has been previously forced i 1.- In a firearm, aframeincluding a" hol- 'low handle; a pair of side covers removably engaged with'thehandle, each cover having an internal recess formed. in it; and a looking bolt pivoted within thehandle and having projecting portions engageable in said recesses. p i
7 2. In-a firearm, a frame including ahol low handle a. pair of side covers removably engaged with the handle, each coverhavinga projection formed on its inner. face, one portion ofwhich is recessed; and a locking bolt pivoted within the handle and having pro I jectingportions engageable in said recesses,

gaged with the handle, each cover havin an mternal projection, the rear edge of w ich is provided with a, recess; and a locking bolt pivotedwithin the handle and having spaced, 5 projecting ribs for engagement in said re- -4. In a firearm, a frame including a hol low handle; a pair of side covers removably 'free upper end with projecting portions engageable in said recesses.
