Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SKILL, a" citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cookand State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Wire-Bound Boxes, of which the follown is a specification. 7
This invention relates to boxes and pertains more particularly to a novel construc-' tion of a wire-bound box.
'. Among other objects, the invention is intended to provide a box of desirable strength, durability, security, and tightness of closure, and capable of afiording effectual protection for its contents;

The box construction illustratediin' Fig. 1 comprises an exteriorwire-bouncl box element and an interior .box element having their corresponding walls spaced apart, the two being so assembled as to afford mutual supporting and strengthening effects. It is desirable that the side sheets in the proj ecting bee5 in any case, when thee'xterior 8O finished box overlapat their corners to proi 1 yond the ends of its attached cleats, which margln will overlap the edge of the adjacent side sheet when the into box form. There are several ways in which this overlapping of side sheets may be accomplished, as-wi N skilled in'the art; and, as indlcated infFig's. l,- 5, and 6, such overlap'margins are provided at the edges of the lid and the bottom of the box'so that these shall .o'v'erla the edges of the vertical front and. rear si es of thebox. i
The wires referredto. above are indicated at 21-, 22, 23, 24, and 25 in several of'the figures.
In addition to the top, bottom, front,-and rear box sections above described, the exterior structure may comprise end'pi'eces 26, about which'the box blank illustrated in Fig.
2 is folded to produce the structure shown parts are folded ll "appear 'to those in Fig. 1. It will be seen that the end pieces 26 fit into the space between the cleats 14: and 19, and 18 and 20, respectively, and are thus firmly held in place and supported over a considerable region adjacent all their edges without the necessity of stapling. T
In the modification disclosed in the drawings (see particularly Figs. 1 and 5), the
end pieces 26 are, prior to being assembled in the completed box, firmly stapled or otherwise secured to pieces 27, which abut atone of their edges and at their bottoms squarely against the surrounding outer cleats when the box is assembled and thus materially strengthen the box as well as accurately defining the folded position of the outer box blank, and at their inner vertical edges are beveled asindicated'at 28 to form a 0011- venient hand hold at their end of the box.
In Fig. 4c are disclosed in relatively posi tioned but slightly separated location the side sections of the inner box structure comprehended in my invention. These side sections comprise appropriately sized pieces of veneer or other suitable material 29, which are attached at each of. their cndsto a cleat 30, preferably having the usual mortise and tenon'construction at their ends. When the structure shown .inFig. t is assembled, so that the mortises and tenons engage, there will be provided an open-ended box structure having the cleats outside. This box structure is placed lwithin the. outer" box structure disclosed in Fig. 1 andmade from the blank shown in Fig. 2, to form theinner box. The'ends of the inner box are fermed "of loose, appropriately sized sheets of veneer 31, which are placed within the cleats 19 and 20. respectively, and in the assembled struc ture are held in position by the. cleats 19 and 80 at one end, and the cleats and 30 at the other end. The end pieces 26 and 31 fit,
when the cover is closed, between the cleats on the cover. section, and are held and sup ported thereby in precisely the same manner as they fit in between and are supported by the cleats on the remaining sections of the outer box blank. 2 V j It will be apparent, therefore, that the cleats 15, 16, and 17 serve not onlyto reinforce and strengthen the box structure as a wliole flbut also serve as spacing elementsto space theiiiner box structure from the outer box structure. The same function is effected by thecleats 30, which, because they are attached to the inner box structure, directly 7 support and strengthen it, but also support and strengthen the outer box structure in the samemanner as the cleats 15, 16, andl'i strengthen the inner box structure. After being assembled, as indicated-in Fig.
1, the cover is closed and the projecting ends of the wire 21, 22, 23, 24:, and 25 twisted together, as indicated at'33 (Fig. 6) in the I usual manner of wire-bound boxes.
The box of my invention has all of the characteristics of strength of the ord nary wire-bound box, supplemented and rein forced by the fact that additional cleats. are provided therein, and affords a doublewall container, every part-of which is adequately supported and reinforced against strain of any kind. The box has valuable insulating,v
properties to prevent sudden changes of tem-v perature in or the penetration of moisture toits contents and is particularly useful in connection with the shipping of explosives, because hooks or the like, when used, cannot damage or puncture the contentsof'the in ner box.

A box comprising a wire-bound outer box element having side pieces and reinforc; ing cleats, certain of said cleats being located in contiguous planes to support op posite faces of end sections or the like, end sections supported by said cleats, additional end sections located contiguously to certain of said first end section supporting cleats, and an'inner box element providing means to hold said additional end sections so contiguous.

A box comprising an outer box element having side pieces with cleats secured thereto, an inner box element having inner side pieces and other cleats secured thereto, certain of the cleats of said inner and outer box elements'respectively beinglocated in two contiguous planes whereby an end piece 01' the like may be inserted between and supported by the cleats in said planes.
10. A box comprising an outer box element and an inner box element, both including side pieces and cleats secured thereto, certain of said cleats at either end of the box being arranged in three contiguous planes, whereby two spaced end sections be inserted between and supported by the cleats in said planes at either end of the box.

A box comprising a plurality of cleat frames; exterior and interior side walls; said exterior side walls inclosing saidplurality of cleat frames; outer and inner end walls secured in position by certain of said cleat frames; and said interior side walls in closed by the cleat frames intermediate said inner end walls. 16. A' box consisting of an interiorly cleated wirebound outer box element, and an exteriorly cleated inner box element, cleats of said inner element interiorly reinforcing said sides of said outer element, and cleats of said outer element 'exteriorly reinforcing the sides of said inner element.
17. A set of box parts comprising a'foldable wirebound box blank to forman outer box element, said blank having foldablyrelated end cleats and intermediate cleats, a
plurality of separate inner side sections to form aninner box element adapted to be inclosed and externally reinforced by cleats of said blank when the latter is folded into box form, and end sections for the inner and outer box elements, all adapted tobe assembled into the form of a double-walled rigid wirebound container without the use of nails or their equivalents. A wirebound double-walled box comprising, in combination, an outer box structure comprising side walls, end walls and reinforcing cleats; an inner box structure having exterior end cleats fitting within the outer box structure; cleats of the inner'and' outer structures cooperating to prevent rela tive longitudinal shifting of said structures; and bindings secured to and around said outer structure.
