Be it known that 1, HUBERT M. PERRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antifriction-Bearings; and 1 do hereby declare that the fol.-
lowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to the letters of reference in arked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in antifriction bearings designed to transmit load between two members capable of a limited relative oscillating movement, and is shown as herein embodied in a side bearing for railroad cars and more particularly to a side bearing to be attached to the truck bolster of the car as distinguished from one carried by the body bolster of the car. The invention consists of the matters hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the bearing with parts broken away to more clearly show the interior construction thereof.

Referring now in detail to that embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings 10 indicates the casing of the side hearing which contains the antifriction bearing element. Said casing consists of a rectangular shell, open top and bottom, having upright side walls 11-11 and upright end walls 12-12. The end walls 12 are provided at their bottom ends with laterally extending ears 13-13 by means of which the casing is attached to a truck bolsterfindicated by the line 14 in Fig. 1. 15-15 indicates upwardly inclined flanges which extend inwardly from the bottom ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.

The bottom edges of the side walls 11-11 and the depending ribs 16-16 define a rectangular opening in which is fixed a bottom filler plate 17 upon the top surface of which rests a wear plate 18. Said plates are held 111131336, the one upon the other, by means of inwardly projecting lugs 19-19 on the side walls of the casing (there bemg four of said lugs located substantially at the four corners of said plate) which engage the top surface of the wear plate, and by bending in the bottom ends of the ribs 16, as shown in Fig. 41. The ribs 16 are made parallel with the end walls 12 of the casin n the first instance, but when the bearin is assembled and after the antifriction ole ment and the plates 17 and 18 have been placed between the ribs 16- and have been rought up against the lugs 19 said ribs are bent inwardly to retain both of said plates in this position.
20 1ndicates an antifriction element or roller, which is located within the casing and 1s adapted to roll longitudinally on the wear plate 18 for a limited distance from the center of the casing toward either end thereof, in a familiar manner. Said antifriction roller is provided at its ends with overbalance members 21 which are so located as to cause the roller to assume a predetermined central position within the casing. The overbalanc members, as shown, are in the form of end extensions of the main body diameter 20 of said roller, which is perpendicular when the roller is in the central position it naturally assumes upon the wear plate.
To increase the overbalancing of the roller, it is preferably cored out at its ends to produce openings 23 above the overbala-nce members 21 and above the center of the roller.
Said openings as shown, are elongated and extend equally to either side of the roller diameter.
The roller 20 is also provided with a set of extensions 21 which project outwardly from the overbalance members near the periphery of the roller. Said extensions are Preferably 'made of a somewhat flat triangular cross section, the inclined top surfaces 25 of which extend downwardly and outwardly from a point on the diameter line 20 in substantially the longitudinal median plane of said overbalance members. Said extensions 21 have fiat elliptical, outwardly projecting lugs 26, at the periphery of the roller, which are of a width on their major axes equal to that of the triangular extensions. The top curved surface of said lugs are formed on an are equal to that of the bottom surface, which of course is the diameter of the roller 20.
In order to guide the roller in its movement on the wear plate and also tolock it within the casing, there is provided in each side wall 11 at its center, recesses 2728-29, the onesmaller than the other and which open into one another. The recesses 27 which are the larger, receive the overbalance members 21 and the recesses 28 which are next in size, receive the extensions 24, while the recesses 29 which are the smaller, receive the lugs 26. The recesses 27, which terminate at their bottom ends in the plane of the top surface of the wear plate 18. have vertical side wall parts 30, arranged near the ends of said wear plate, a horizontal top wall part 31 and oppositely disposed, inclined wall parts 32 which connects the side wall parts with the top wall parts. The recesses 28 which open through the bottom edges of the sidewalls 11, have upright side wall parts 33 and a horizontal top wall part 3+1 spaced below the top wall parts 31 of the recesses .27. The recesses 29 have side wall parts 35 which are curved outwardly and downwardly from the center of the casing just below the top wall parts 3 1 of the recesses 28, said side wall parts merging into the side wall parts of the recesses 28 in the plane of the top surface of the wear plate 18. Said recesses '29 are of a width equal to the width of the flat, elliptical lugs 26 and said side walls 35 thereof are struck on a curve approximating the path of travel of the ends of the flat, elliptical lugs 26, so that said ends and curved side walls engage and coact with each other at all times in the movement of the roller to prevent longitudinal'displacement of said roller in any of its positions on the wear plate.
In that part of the side wallsll, defining the recesses 29 are openings 36 which together with similar but larger openings 37 in the end walls 12, permit a Ventilation of the casing so that no foreign particles may collect therein. Curved ribs 38 made on an arc corresponding to the periphery 'of the roller 20 and forming continuations ofthe reached its limit of travel toward either end of the casing.
The operation of the side bearing is apparent from the description above set forth. a
When not under load, the roller will naturally assume a central position in the casing,
as shown in Fig.1 under the action of the overbalance members 21.
lVhen the roller 20 is engaged by the bearing plate on the body bolster (not shown) and is caused to roll toward one end of the easing into that position shown in Fig. 4:,
wherein the periphery of the roller is engaged with the curved ribs '38, the end surfaces of the overbalance members 21' and the casing, the ends of the fiat, elliptical lugs 26 will at all times engage with the curved wall parts 35 so as to hold the roller against any longitudinal displacement .due to any jolt or jar imparted to the car to which the side bearing is applied. As the roller moves to the right, (as shown in Fig. 4) the left hand corners or sides of the lugs 26 will move upwardly iii engagement with the associated wall parts 35, the other or right hand corners or ends remaining in substantially its normal position with reference to their associated side wall parts 35.
lVhen the roller is at one limit of its'movement in the casing, the flat top surface of the overbalance members are parallel with, but spaced from the inclined wall parts 32 of the recess 27. lVhen the roller is in the position shown in Fig. 4, and is released from load, the overbalance members 21 will cause it to roll back to the normal, central position it naturally assumes, the left hand corners or sides of the lugs 26 moving downwardly against their associated side wall parts.
Thus it is apparent that the roller when released from load, will naturally assume and retain its normal, central position in the casing, ready to be again engaged and roll in either direction. Thus the roller can never be left at'a place other than its predetermined, central position when released from load, so that it will fail to operate in its intended manner. Furthermore, no means are employed to' cause a lift of the body bolster in the operation of the side bearing. By employing the intermediate extensions 24: be-v tween the members 21 and lugs 26, I am enabled to make the lugs shorter in length so that they readily withstand such strain as is imposed upon them.
The side bearing is easily assembled by turning the casing bottom side .up, after which the roller 20 is introduced through neeaeeo the open bottom thereof, with its lugs alined with the recesses in the side walls 11. The wear plate 18 and bottom plate 17 are placed in position, after which the ribs 16 are bent over by striking the same with. a hammer to lock said plates in position. As the roller 20 is of a width through its lugs greater than the width of the casing at its top end, it is apparent that the roller cannot be withdrawn through said end. Thus the side bearing may be shipped fully assembled without coming apart.
l/Vhile in describing my invention, I have referred to certain details of mechanical construction, form and arrangement of parts, I do not wish to be limited thereto except as may be pointed out in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention 1. In a side bearing, the combination of an open top casing having side and end walls, means providing a bearing plate at the bottom of said casing, a roller in said casing capable of a limited rolling movement on said bearing plate from the center toward either end of the casing, said roller being overloalanced on one peripheral side and be ing stepped downwardly toward said side at its ends to provide overbalance extensions and lugs projecting beyond said extensions, the side walls of the casing having recesses of corresponding stepped construction, the 7 sides of the outermost part of each recess, diverging downwardly in curves approximating the path of travel of the lateral edges of the ends of said lugs, whichengage the said sides of the recesses to prevent longitudinal displacement of said roller in any of its positions on said'wear plate.
2. In a side bearing, the combination of an open top casing having side and end walls, means providing a bearing plate at the bottom of said casing, a roller in said casing capable of a limited rolling movement on said bearing plate from the center toward either end of the casing, said roller having overbalance extensions at its ends on one ripheral side of the roller, lugs projecting outwardly from the ends of said overbalanoe extensions near the periphery thereof, the
side walls of the casing being provided with centrally disposed recesses, which open the one into the other, one of said recesses in each side wall receiving the overbalance extensions and the other of said recesses receiving said lugs, said last mentioned recesses having sides formed to coact with and engage the sides of said lugs at all times to prevent longitudinal displacement of said roller in any of its positions on said wear plate.
3. In a side bearing, the combination of an open top casing having side and end walls, means providing a bearing plate at the bottom of said casing, a. roller in said casing capable of a limited rolling movement on said bearing plate from the center toward either. end of the casing, said roller having overbalance extensions at its ends on one peripheral side of the roller, lugs projecting outwardly from the ends of said overbalance extensions near the periphery thereof, said lugs being of flat, elliptical cross section arranged with the greatest diameter at a right angle to the axis of the roller, the side walls of the casing being provided with centrally arranged, larger and smaller recesses which open the one into the other, said larger recesses being adapted to receive the overbalance extensions and the smaller recesses being substantially triangular in shape and adapted to receive said lugs, the sides of said smaller recesses being curved downwardly and outwardly from each other fromahe apex toward the base, which is of a width substantially equalto the width otsald elliptical lugs, the curved sides of said recesses coacting with and engaging the sides of said lugs at all times to prevent longitudinal displacement of said roller in any of its posltions on said wear plate.
