Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov-22, 1221.
Application filed September 12, 1918. Serial No. 253,704.
To (LZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HARRY S. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-Cars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dump cars, and
more particularly to dump cars which are that the laborers sometimes attempt to use the car for center dump work without changing the end to the proper position.
This results in the accumulation of material on the fixed horizontal floor portions at the ends of the car beyond the central hopper and in view of the fact that said end floor portions are not self clearing, this accumulated material must be shoveled out manually. Such is not desirable.
By the present invention the stationary end, as in all gondola cars, is retained, and in addition thereto, in order to convert the car for center dump work, instead of moving the end of the car inwardly to the end of the hopper, swinging end portions or gates are provided which may be moved into position for center dumping and swung back against the sides 01"- the car. indeed, it is possible to use portions of the car sides or other portions of the car for these gates.
T he object of this invention is to provide an end for the hopper portion which can be placed readily and secured in such position and be removed therefrom to permit the use of the entire length of the car with the minimum amount of trouble and time.
This and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheets of drawings, ip which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary planview of my improved convertible dump car; and,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same dump car taken in the plane of line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures oil the drawings, it will be noted that l have provided a dump car including sides 10, ends 11 and a bottom, including fixed horizontal floor portions 12 at the ends of the car. Intermediate the fixed floor portions 12, the bottom of the car is provided with a central hopper 18 including a dump door 14, by means of which the load, or a portion thereof, may be dumped between the rails. The load also may be dumped to the outside of the rails by moving the floor doors 15 into an open position, as shown inFig. 2 of the drawings. Normally, however, these floor doors 15 oocupy a horizontal position and extend the entire distance between the stationary floor portions 12. When the car is arranged a hopper bottom car, central floor doors 16 occupy an inclined position extending upwardly and outwardly toward the sides of the car, the outer ends of said doors 16 being provided with extension portions which rest against the sides 10 of the car. When the car is arranged as a flat bottom car, the doors 16, as well as the doors 15,
take a horizontal position, the central hopper 13 under such conditions being covered.
W hen the car is arranged as a hopper loottom car for carrying dumpable material, unless some separating means is provided the dumpable material not only occupies the hopper portion of the car, but also accumulates and occupies the fixed horizontal floor portions 12 at the endsoi the car. As men tioned above, carshave been provided with solid end pieces which are movable to a position at the ends of the hoppers, but in view of the fact that such end pieces are so heavy and hard to handle, laborers many times simply make no effort to change the position of same. Accordingly, when the dump doors are opened, all of the material is dumped with the exception of the material occupying the fixed horizontal floor portions 12. In order to remove the same from the car it is necessary to shovel the material out of the car manually. However, this fixed floor space 12 is very desirtion to providing solid permanently fixed car end pieces, I have provided readily movable means for forming hopper end walls and for separating the fixed floor portions 12 of the car from the remaining part of the car. This means takes the form of a pair of doors 17, which preferably are pivotally connected at 18 to the sides of the into closed position, as shown in the figures sides of the car.
of the drawings, and securely connected to each other at their free ends by any suitable means, csuch as turn buckles 18', for rigidly holding the doors in such position. The closing movement of the doors 17 is limited by stop members 20 carried by the door and movable into engagement with cooperating stop members :21 carrred by the With the doors 1? in closed position, the end portions of the car are isolated from the central hopper portion, and dumpable material is prevented from being loaded onto the fixed floor portions 12. Accordingly, when the dump doors are closed, the entire load slides out of the car. When the car is arranged as a fiat bottom car the doors 1'? are swung outwardly into open position, and if desired locked in such position by suitable latch members 19 cooperating with an associated part of the car structure, thereby throwing the entire car into one compartment to accommodate a non-dumpable load. These doors 17, if desired, may be portions of the car sides. Said doors are readily moved from one position to another and locked with great ease and in little time.
There may be various modifications of my invention as herein particularly shown and described, and it is my intention to cover all such modifications which do not involve a departure from the spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A convertible dump car having sides, stationary ends and a bottom, the sides being provided at an intermediate point with swinging sections forming in one position 'an intermediate hopper end for the car.
2. A convertible dump car having sides, ends and a bottom, a side of said car bemg provided with a swinging element forming in one position an intermediate hopper end for the car.
3. A convertible dump car having sides, ends and a hopper bottom, a side of said car being provided with a swinging element forming in one position a hopper end wall.
4. A convertible dump car having sides, stationary ends and a bottom, a side of said car being provided with a swinging element forming in one position an intermediate end for the car.
5. A dump car including sides,-ends and a bottom which may be converted from a dumpable hopper bottom to a flat bottom, a portion er the bottom at all times remaining fixed, and doors pivotally connected to the sides of the car for separating said fixed portion from the other portion of the car.
6. A dump car including sides, ends and.
a bottom which may be converted from a dumpable hopper bottom to a fiat bottom, a portion of the bottom at all times remaining fixed, doors pivotally connected to the sides of the car for separating said fixed portion from the other portion of the car, and means for supporting the doors in said separating position.
7. A dump car including sides, ends and a bottom which may be converted from a dumpable hopper bottom to a flat bottom, the end portions of the bottom being fixed,
and swinging means for separating said end portions from the intermediate portion of the car.
8. A dump car including sides, ends and a bottom, and side swinging doors pivotally connected to the sides of the car for dividing the same into compartments.
9. A dump car including sides, ends and a bottom, the ends of the car having fixed floor portions, an intermediate floor portion of the car including dumping doors whereby the load may be dumped, and pivotally mounted side swinging doors for separating the end portions from the intermediate portion.
10. A dump car including sides, ends and a bottom having stationary floor portions at the ends of the car, an intermediate floor portion including" dump doors whereby a load carried by the intermediate portion of the car may be dumped, and side swinging means interposed between said intermediate and end portions to prevent the dumpable material being loaded into the end portions of the car.
