Description
w. L'. WEEKSY. PAPER HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT-20, 1-919- Patentai Nov. 29, 1921 UNITEDSTAES WALTER L. WEEKS, OF PATCHOGUE, NEW YORK. I
PEER-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 20,131 Serial No. 325,158.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER L. Warns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Patchogue, county of Suffolk, State of. New York, have invented an Improvement in Paper-Holders, of which the following de scription, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to devices for holding and delivering paper and is designed to provide an improved holder especially de signed for paper in roll form.
In the drawing of one embodiment of my invention illustrated and described herein,
Figure 1 is a front elevation;
Fig. 2, a side or end elevation;
Fig. 3, a front elevation with the paper roll removed and the roll holding arms raised to inoperative position;
Fig. 4, a partial longitudinal section of the universal joint locking the two arms, the latter broken away;
Figs. 5 and 6, end views respectively of the opposite joint members; and
Fig. 7 partial side view of modified form of arm construction.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, my novel holder comprises a back 1, adapted to be, and here shown as mounted upon any suitable support 2. This back has its upper edge angularly inclined from the central point and turned over to form hinges3, 4.
For removably holding and delivering the paper 5, shown in roll form, I provide a novel automatic paper roll locking and unlocking device comprising opposed arms 6, 7, bent to cooperate with the hinge members 3, 4, and provided with any suitable means for retaining the arms in hinged relation. The preferred form of construction is shown in Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, and comprises opposed and co-acting universal joint members 8, 9.
The joint member'S is shown as a plate secured at right angles to the rod or shaft 6 and having six edge faces 70, but it is obvious that a greater or less number may be provided if preferred. The socket member 9 1s constructed with the same number of faces 10 as the member 8, and of sufiicientdepth to permit the desired angularization of the haft 6, 7, without disengagement of the j o1nt members, and to have a close working fit.
Obviously the member 8 should have its 15, Fig. 7, to
edges beveled slightly at 11, to permit it to be positioned properly at the various angles required relative to the socket 9. L
The arms 6, 7, may be provided with any preferred form of roll engaging members 12, and of desired size. Herein they are shown as short rolls of wood adapted to enter and support the opposite ends of the hollow core 13 on which the paper 5 is wound. They may be retained on the arm ends by pins 14, or by any other convenient means.
To insert a roll of paper in the holder the arms 6, are raised to the position shown in Fig. 3, thus automatically spreading the arms by virtue of the angular disposition of the hinges 3, 4.
he paper core 13 is then placed on one of the rolls 12, and when the arms are dropped again to operable position as in F igs. 1, 2, the opposite roll enters the opposite end of the core and the arms automatically lock the paper roll between them. The
paper is then fed as desired by unrolling it in the usual manner.
It will readily be seen that, if desired, the ends of the arms 6, 7 may be flanged as at retain them in their hinged relation to the base 1.
This construction will act to retain the arms in position, but if used the arms must both be moved jointly, as one arm will not move the other.
The novel universal joint is an important feature of my improved holder as it is inexpensive to make and easy to disconnect or assemble in any connection.
y improved holder is simple in construction, convenient to fill and use, and my invention is not restricted to the details shown in the present embodiment thereof.
laims:
1. A paper holder comprising a back, roll holding arms pivoted thereto and capable of angular upward spreading action to receive the roll or toautomatically release the same.
2. A paper holder comprising a back, roll holding arms movably connected thereto, and having downward roll locking and upward roll unlocking action effected by movement of one of the arms.
3. A paper holder comprising a back, roll holding arms movable thereon, and a universal joint for the arms.
4. A paper holder comprising a back, roll Patented Nov. 29,1921.
holding arms movable thereon and a universal joint therefor comprising a plate with a plurality of angular faces, and a socket memher having a similarly arranged wall and faces. 7
5. A paper holder comprising a back, roll holding arms so movable thereon that movement upward causes automatic spreading action of the arms to receive the paper roll.
- operative position,
holding arms, said arms so jointed that elevation of one arm will simultaneously elevate the opposite arm, the1r planes of movement being non-parallel, thusproviding roll locking and roll releasing action thereof.
8. A roll paper holding and delivering device comprising a back, arms secured thereto and capable of upward movement thereon, the arms so connected that they move simultaneously into either operative or inoperative position.
9. A paper delivering device comprising a back, and paper holding arms thereon adapted, by raising of one of the arms, to
separate and receive thepaper, and adapted,
when dropped, to automatically approach each other to lock the paper thereon for delivery. V
In testimony whereof Ihave signed my name to this specification.
