OVEN ATTACHMENT.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it lnoivn that l, JOHN C. RAMSAY, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Oven Attachments; and l do declare the tolloiving' to be a t'ull, clear7 and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to an improved attachment i'or ovens7 it being especially designed tor use in connection with the ovens of gas ranges, although it is not to be re- Stricted to this particular use.

There are on the market many gas ranges and portable ovens tor use on gas stoves, these portable ovens and ovens of ranges being ordinarily provided in their bottoms Wit-ha centrally arranged opening beneath which the burner is arranged and from which it is spaced. This construction and arrangement is objectionable since air currents passing beneath the bottom ot' the range vor unuerneath the stove catch the flame from the burner and dellect it laterally beneath the bottom of the oven. In this Way, much heat Jrom the burner is Wasted and a Waste ot gas is also brought about. This condition ot allairs places much additional and needless expense on the user of ranges and stoves ot this construction, and because ot the great loss ot needed heat, much time is consumed in properly heating the oven.

It is intention to overcome the above circumstances by employing an attachment in the form of a sleeve which may be inserted downwardly through the opening in the bottom ot the oven to surround the burner so as to create an upward dratt, whereby practically all of the heat Will be driven into the oven and at the same time the unnecessary lateral deflection of the flame beneath the bottom of the oven will be overcome.

Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment ot the above mentioned type which is removable so that When used vrith portable ovens, it may be Withdrawn into the interior ol the oven and inverted so that it Will be entirely out ot the Way and vvill leave the bottom ot such oven entirely flush. so that it may be placed on a at surface.

provide an attachment of the above mentioned class which also includes a combined article supporting and flame spreader plate tor insertion in the oven over the hole in the bottom ot the latter, this plate beingadvantageous because it iecomes intensely heated during operation of the range and thus serves as a hot plate on which articles ot food may be placed and kept Warm. It is also advantageous in that it is a separate and independent element. thus permitting it to be supported on one ot the usual grids in the oven ivnen it is not in use.

r\ further object of the invention is to provide an attachment ot the above mentioned class which includes the aforesaid sleeve, the latter being provided at its inner end with a flange which rests on the oven bottom to retain the sleeve in place: together With the atorcsaid combined article supporting and llame Spreader plate which includes dependinni legs engageable with the periphery of the nanrre on the sleeve. Thusythe flange is `given the additional 'tunction of preventing accidental and undue movement ot the plate.

Other objects and advantages ot the invention will be apparent during the course oit' the following description.

For the purposeI ot enabling persons who read this specification to obtain a clear understanding of the saine, l have illustrated my improved attachment as being used in connection with a conventional type ot' gas range. Referring to these parts thereof by letters. it will be seen that the letter E indicates a conventional type ot A`@as range including an oven structure having central. opening in its bottom, beneath which the burner 9 is located and trom which it is spaced. Range E is. of course, provided with ledges L and article supporting` grids G slidable on these ledges.

My attachment, as before intimated. includes a cylindrical relatively long sleeve l Which is designed to be extended downwardly through the opening in the bottom of an oven so as to surround the burner and extend considerable distance below this burner. This sleeve is provided on its inner end with a laterally directed flange 2 which rests on the bottom of the oven and serves to retain the sleeve in position. It is also provided in one side 'ith a slot 3 which straddles the fuel supply pipe of the burner and assists in retaining it in position and prevents rotation thereof. lVith this sleeve in place, it will be seen that air passing beneath the stove or range will be directed upwardly through the sleeve and will thus create a draft, which will in turn carry prac* tically all of the heat from the flame into the oven, causing); the latter to become immediately heated and serving to superheat the air in the oven. My attachment also includes a combined article supporting` and flame spreading' plate el which is designed to be placed in the oven over the opening in its bottom. This plate, if desirable, may be provided with supporting legs 5 to space it above the bottom of the oven and permit the flame to pass around it. It is to be noted, as before indicated, that the legs a of the plate are in engagement with the periphery of the fianlrje S2, thus giving' the iiange the additional function of serving` to hold the hot plate7 in place and prevent accidental displacement thereof, which might otherwise occur.

F rom the foregoing` description, it will be Y seen that I have devised an extremely effeet-ive and advantageous attachment for portable ovens used on gas stoves and for use in ovens of ,gas ranges. The employinentof the relatively long sleeve creates a draft which effectively carries the heat from the flame into the oven and superheats the air in the latter and thus causes it to become properly heated in an extremely short time. Furthermore, this sleeve prevents the flame from being deflected laterally beneath the bottom of the oven, which circumstances causes an unnecessary waste of fuel. Then again, the plate 4 serves to distribute the heat more evenly in the oven, can be used as a hot plate on which articles of food may be supported and kept warm, or may be used as a substitute for one of the grids for supporting articles while the latter are being cooked. When lmy attachment is used in connection with portable ovens, it will not interfere with the placement of such an oven on a flat surface, because the sleeve may be withdrawn into the oven and inverted as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l so as to be entirely out of the way.

lVhile I have shown and described my at tachment as being' used in connection with Stoves employing` gas as a fuel, I wish it to beunderstood that it may be equally well used withy similar stoves and ranges employing other kinds of fuel.

It is thought that a careful consideration of the foifeurniigg` description taken in connection with the accomganying' drawings, will enable persons slrilled in the art to which this invention relates, to obtain a clear understanding' of the same, therefore, a more lengthy description is deemed unnecessary. s

Since probably the best results may be obtained with the construction and arrangement of parts herein described and shown, and I take this construction and arrangement as the preferred embodiment of my invention. However, I wish it to be under stood that changes, so long; as they do not depart from the scope of the snbioined claim, may be made in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts of the attachment.

v I claim:

In combination, an oven having a centrally disposed opening in the bottom, a bnrner disposed beneath and spaced from the opening', a cylindrical sleeve extending downwardly through said opening and surrounding' the burner, said sleeve having` a lateral annular flange on its inner end restinn; on the bottom of the oven, retaining` the sleeve in place, and a combined article-supporting and flame spreader plate arranged in the oven over the aforesaid opening, said plate including' depending legs engaged with the periphery of said flange, the latter serving to prevent undue shifting or possible displacement of the plate.
