IMPROVEMENT IN MEDICAL COMPOUNDS FOR LIVER DISEASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,707, dated J une 10, 1873; application filed May 17, 1873.
'HAM, of Mount Morris, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Medical Compound, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to supply an efficient compound for diseases arising from a deranged condition of the liver and complaints having their origin therein. It will also be useful in a great class of other cases, as it purifies the blood, invigorates the action of the stomach, and stimulates the whole system. My invention consists mainly in extracting with alcohol the bitter part of dilferent roots and herbs, to be mixed, after percolation, with water, sugar, and the oil of sassafras.
The proportion of the different roots and herbs is as follows: Socatrine aloe-s, five ounces; gentian, one-half ounce; quassia, one-halt ounce; golden seal, one-half ounce; saffron,
- one-half ounce; capsicum, one-half ounce;
gamboge, one dram; rhubarb, one-half ounce.
These ingredients are placed in an earthen or stone vessel, and one quart of alcohol added to extract the medicinal parts contained therein. After about nine daysthe liquid is percolated, and a quart of water (aqua; fontana) with one dram of the oil of sassafras added.
