Be it known that I, Gronon G. IVrLLrAMs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blow-Out Boots,of which the following is a specification, reterence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to what is known as blow-out boots; that is, devices which are used in the repair of pneumatic tires and the like for reinforcing the tire casing at a point where it has become weakened due to wear or to a puncture or blow-out hole in said casing.
A leading object of the present invention is to provide a blow-out boot with a simplified means of uniting the divided edges of the boot surrounding the inner tube so that said edges may be readily united one to the other before the boot and tube are positioned in the tire casing.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists of a blowout boot, the divided edges of which are provided with flexible strips, said strips being of such width that one may overlap the other, each of said strips being provided with transverse slots and intermediate loops, and the arrangement being such that the slots of one of the strips registers with the loops of the co-acting strip so that said loops may be drawn into the slots of the companion strip and a flexible or other thong adapted to extend longitudinally of the boot and to be laced through the aforesaid loops, substantially as I will hereinafter describe and point out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which similar reference characters indicate like parts in the several views;
Figure 1 is a plan view of a blow-out boot embodying my invention and showingdahe same opened out to its full width.
Fig. 2 is a view of the bootin its rolled or operative form with the divided edges secured by the lacing means.
Fig. 3 illustrates a modified form of lacing thong.
In a prior application, filed by me June 2, 1920, Serial Number 385,979, I have disclosed a form of blow-out boot to which the present improvement is applicable and this form ot boot I have illustrated in the drawings, although it is to be understood that the present improvement, which relates specifically to a means for uniting the free edges of the divided boot, is not restricted in its use with the particular boot construction of said prior application, since it may be used in connection with other blow-out boots with equal success.
In the illustrated embodiment or" my in vcntion the boot A is shown as composed of plurality of laminations a of fabric such as is common in the construction of devices of this character. Attached by stitching or otherwise to the opposite or divided edges of the boot are strips 7) of fabric or other flexible material, the width of the strips being such that when the boot is in its rolled or folded form, substantially as it is when in place in the tire, the strips overlap for a considerable distance.
The strips 7) have such width as to provide for the formation therein of transverse slots 0 said slots being spaced from each other to form the intermediate loops (Z. The arrangement is, further, such that the loops d of the one strip will register with the slots of the other strip so that when the strips are properly overlapped, the loops of one strip may be drawn into or partly through the slots of the other strip so as to permit of the lacing or running through these loops or" a thong c; this thong may be of flexible material in which case (Fig. 1) it will have one end permanently secured to the boot at point beyond one end of the strips 7), said thong adapted to be laced through the inserted loops of the underlying strip so as to securely unite the overlapping edges of the divided boot and form a substantially flat closure for said boot, and one which can be readily applied and released. In Fig. 8, the thong e is made entirely separate from the boot and of substantially inflexible material, as compressed fiber, but its lacing function will be substantially as described for the flexible thong of Fig. 1.
A boot such as I have described is of such dimensions that it may entirely encircle the inner tube, thus removing all strain from the outer casing at the injured point. The boot corresponds with the shape of the casing and fits the latter snugly and without wrinkle or crease. All of its parts are of flexible material and no metallic fastenings are necessary in the means which are employed for uniting the free edges of the divided boot.
In practice, the boot is placed around the" inner tube and its side strips b are overlapped and the loops of one of said strips drawn partly through the slots of the other strip. Then the thong is laced through the inserted and exposed loops to hold the divided edges of the boot in a substantially smooth and flat condition, and in a secure manner. The tube with the boot in position thereon is then inserted into the tire casing with the boot covering the point in the casing where the blow-out or puncture has occurred, and the tire is inflated in the usual manner. 7
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. A blow-out boot divided longitudinally and having strips along its divided edges, said strips adapted to overlap and each of said strips being fashioned with transverse ing longitudinally of the boot adapted to be laced through the exposed loops of one of said strips and t0 overlie'the loop-portions of the other strip.
2. A blow-out boot divided longitudinally and having its free edges overlapping and formed with transverse slots, said slots being spaced from each other to form intermediate loops, the loops formed in one of said edges adapted to register with and to be drawn into and exposed through the slots in the other edge of the boot, and a flexible thong xtending longitudinally of the boot having one end secured thereto and having its tree portion adapted to be laced through the exposed loops whereby the edges of the boot are'secured in closed overlapped position.
