To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, F nriniinlc Gnorrrma citizen of Switzerland, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, and MAXIME L. VAN Henna, a subject of the King of Belgium, and a resident of the city of New York, Corona, borough of Queens, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Imroved Adjustable Hat-Lining, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to bandeaux, hat linings and similar articles provided with hoops having overlapping ends to permit of adjusting the lining to hats of different sizes and such, for instance. as shown and described in the Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,225,618, granted to us on May 8. 1917.

The object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved adjustable lining for womens hats arranged to permit, first, to fit the lining to any sized hat, and then fit the hat by means of the lining to any sized head. Another object is to disgense with the hoop and with the objectionable puckering or gathering of the material occasioned by the constriction of the outer edge of the lining from full size to a smaller size. Another object is to provide a lining not liable to leave any marks on the users forehead even should the hat fit closely or tightly on the head. Another object is to give a smooth, neat finish to the hat.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indieate corresponding parts in all the views.

ing one end of the constricting cord or string drawn out of a cut in the hem for adjusting the lining to bats smaller than the full-sized lining; and

Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation of the adjustable hat lining in position in the hat.

The crown of the adjustable hat lining comprises a side portion 10 made of silk, satinet or a similar flexible fabric, and a top 11 made of a similar material but usually stiffened and of oval shape to conform to the shape of the crown of the hat in which the lining is used. The side portion 10 is cut at a bias.' as plainly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and a hem 12 is formed lengthwise of the side portion intermediate the sides thereof to provide an attaching portion 13 doubled up in an outward direction and fastened at the bend 14 by stitches 15 to the hat 16, as plainly indicated in Fig. 6. In the hem 12 is arranged a constricting member 20, preferably in the form of a draw string of an elastic or non-elastic material with the ends projecting beyond the hem 12.

In attaching the upper edge of the side portion 10 to the margin of the oval or elliptical top 11, the operator sews on one upper corner of the side portion 10 to the margin of the top 11 to one side of the major axis of the top 11 at a point 30 indicated in Fig. 2, and the operator in sewing the upper edge of the side portion 10 to the margin of the top 11 gathers the said upper edge, and on'finishing the operation the other upper corner terminates or slightly overlaps at the beginning point 30. Now owing to the bias cut of the side portion 10, the adjacent sides of the side portion 10 extend diagonally downwardly and rearwardly approximately to the back of the lining, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. It will be noticed that the sides of the side portion 10 are in close proximity to each other and can be drawn into more or less overlapping relation by hand, and then the ends of the constricting member 20 are tied preferably into a bow 21. The bow .is located at the back of the hat. It will be noticed that the hem 12 and the constricting means 20 permit of adjusting the lining to fit snugly on the head of the wearer. In case considerable reduction has to be made in order to properly fit the lining to the hat, it is only necessary for the user to cut the hem 12 at a point 22 located the necessary distance inward from one end of the hem, as plainly shown inFig.15,,topermitthe user to draw out this end through the cut portion at the point22, and place theend of theside portion in which the hem has been out under or behindthe other end of the side portion in overlapping relation so that both protruding ends of the constricting member emerge from the hem in adj acent relation. The two ends of the constricting member 20 arenow to be tied into a how 21 and it is evident that the circumference of the lining has beendecreased to insure a proper fit of the lining in the hat. By adjusting the elastic 20 in the hem to give. it more or less tension, the lining is properly fitted to the wearers head. Thus by the. arrangement described the liningcan be correctly fitted into any size hat and the hat can then be adjusted to fit the wearers head.

It Will be noticed that by doubling up the edge of the attaching portion 13 in an outward direction andfastening the bandeau 14 to the hat an exceedingly fine finish is iven to the lining, and by arrangin the ow 21 at the back it is not liable to interfere with the comfort of the wearer as the bowis at the wearers hair. It Will further be noticed that no undesirable obstruction is arranged at the front or one that is liable to leave anymarks on the wearers forehead.

Having thus described our invention, we claim HS'IIGW and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an article of manufacture, a hat lining comprisin a crown having a gathered top and a sic e portion formed of a flexible material cut at a bias, the sides of the said side portion being in overlapping relation, the lower edge of the said side portion being doubled up outwardly to form an attaching edge for fastening the lining into the hat, the lower portion of the said side portion being provided with an integral hem a distance from the said attaching edge and intermediate the latterand the top, anda draw string in the said hem, one end of the said drawstring projecting beyond the corresponding end of. the hem, the latter having an opening a distance from its other endforthe passage of the other end of the draw stringtoallow offastening the ends of the draw String together with the henr ends in overlapping relation.
