UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN L. BOWMAN, OF GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS.
AMUSEMENT DEVICE.
Application filed July 28,
A. further object of the invention is to i provide an adjustable seesaw.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter more fully appear, I have invented the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is an elevational view of my device.
Fig. 2 is a similar view taken from another end and shown in adjusted position.
Fig. 3 is a top plan View.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5 is a cross section of a roller bearing ring.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views in the drawings in which 1 is a combined seesaw and carousel which consists of a base 2 having openings whereby it can be secured to the floor by means of long screws 4, when used indoors, or to the ground by means of rods or other suitable anchors (not shown). The
.base 2 has a central upright tube 5 cast integral therewith. Telescopically mounted within the tube 5 is a rod 6 having a plurality of cross bores 7 either one of which may aline with opposing cross openings 8 in the tube 5 whereby through means of a cotter or other pin 9, the height of the device may readily be adjusted. The upper end of the rod 6 is provided with a U-shaped bearing 10 one end wall of which has a pair of openings which aline with similar openings in the other end wall thereof, said openings alining with similar openings in the depending flanges 15 and 16 of the head 17. When both bolts 18 and 19 are projected through the alining opening of the head 17 and bearing member 10, said head and the rod 6 are held rigidly connected and the device may be used as a carousel, in which Specification of Letters Patent.
1919. Serial No. 313,747.
case the cotter pin forming the adjustment between the members 5 and 6 is placed in an opening 7 which is raised above the top of member 5 and the roller bearing member 20 and seats on the latter member which in turn seats on the upper end of the member 5. This arrangement permits the upper member 6 to freely rotate upon the base member and prevents teeter movement of the head 17 and boards mounted thereon by means of bolts 22. When the device is to be used as a seesaw the bolt 19 is withdrawn and the cotter pin connecting the members 5 and 6 is projected through alining openings in both of said members, thus preventing rotary movement of said member 6 relative to its supporting tube 5, and permitting teeter movement of the head 17 upon the bearing member 10.
The boards 23 and 24 bolted on the head 17 are each formed of slidably adjustably connected sections 25 and 26, and 27 and 28. Each of these sections has a plurality of spaced apart sets of bores 29, any sets of which on different boards may be alined to receive the bolts 22 whereby the length of the members 23 and 24 may be readily adjusted for outdoors, or indoors, according to the width of the room in which it will be located.
If desired seats 30 may be pivotally mounted on the ends of the members 23 and 24 by means of pins 31 thereon projecting through openings 32 adjacent the ends of said members 23 and 24. Frictional engagement between the bottoms of the seats 30 and the members 23 and 24 will prevent too free rotary movement of said seats. By means of these pivotally mounted seats, children using the device as a carousel may sit with the legs hanging over one edge of the boards and operate the device by either a walking movement or kicking movement. In seesawing the seats may be turned to face one another in order that the children may straddle the boards if they so wish.
Having now described my invention that which I claim to be new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
l. A combined see saw and carousel comprising a base, a head rotatably carried by the base, a bracket having openings formed therein, means for hingedly connecting the bracket to said head, right angularly extending teeter boards arranged on said bracket, the teeter boards having pairs of alined openings formed therein arranged to aline with the openings in the bracket, and pins arranged to fit in said alined openings.
2. A combined see saw and carousel comprising a base, a tubular sleeve formed on said base, a rod telescopically mounted in said sleeve, said rod and sleeve having a plurality of openings formed therein, a re movable pin arranged to fit in any one of said openings, a ballbearing ring arranged to detachably fit on the upper end of said sleeve, said pin being adapted to fit upon the upper surface of said ball bearing ring, a head formed on the rod, a bracket, the bracket and head having pairs of alined openings formed therein, a pivot pin arranged to fit in one of the alined openings, a locking pin arranged to detachably iii; in the other of the alined openings, and teeter boards carried by the upper surface of said brackets. v
3. A combined see saw and carousel comprising a base, a head rot'atably carried by the base, a bracket arranged above said head, means for hingedly connecting the bracket -to the head, means for locking the bracket to the head against swinging movement, rig-ht angular extending teeter boards arranged above the said head, each of said boards including a pair of adjustable sections, the sections having alined openings formed therein, the bracket having alined openings formed therein, and removable pins arranged to fit in the alined openings in the sections of the teeter boards and the openings in the bracket. p In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
