To all whom/it may concern:

Be it known that I, AMos A. GLIssoN, a citizen of theUnited States of America, residing at Fort Worth, in the county of Tarrant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Package-Binders and Hooks Therefor and Record-Checks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improved strapbinder, hooks and straps therefor, and a record check; and the object is to provide simple, effective and relatively economic means for closely and securely binding metal or other bands or straps about or around and protecting the contents of boxes, bales, trunks and the like when such articles are to be shipped or otherwise subjected to frequent or rough handling, and to afford means for preventing pilfering from shipping containers in the course of tra'nsportation; to provide means whereby persons to be held responsible for such containers and their contents in course of movements may be systematically and unerringly charged therewith when anything has been wrongfully done with such containers; to provide means for definitely identifying and promoting prompt and proper deliveries of shipments that may go astray. Another object is to provide devices by which packages or bales or containers may be quickly bound and to provide devices which are adjustable to'several sizes of bundles, bales or containers. Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed'out in the claims.

The locking device has a tubular member 1 which is larger at one end than at the other end and has a separable tag or check member 2 at the smaller end, the metal being perforated at the juncture of the tag member with the body of the member 1. The main locking member 3 has flanges 4 at right angles to the body thereof which serve as wall braces for the member 1 and as guard members for the ends of the securing band or strap 6 used for binding the packages, articles or containers to be protected. The locking member 3 has a turnedunder extension at one end to form a hook 5 to engage the hook 13 of the securing band 6 within the tubular device 1. The other end of the member?) has an extension which is preferably manifolded upon itself to form a cushioning member 7 and a hook 8,the hook 8 being for locking the member 3 within the tubular member 1. The cushion member 7 will cause the band 6 to enter the upper part of the tubular member 1 so that the hook 9 of the band will be in position to engage one of the stops 10 of the locking or stop' member 11. The locking member 11 is preferably made of a single piece of pliable metal and is preferably formed by devices that will cut the material to compose same to proper dimensions and out or otherwise produce transverse slots therein and then form the stop member 10 by pressing the slotted portions of the strips of metal into stops or loops 10 to closely fit within the slot l2,and pressing or forming flanges 14.- on the edges of the stop member 11. The loop or stop members 10 will thus project through the slot 12 in the member 3 and the flanges 14 of the stop member 11 will rest against the bottom of the member 3 to hold the loop members 10 against movement relative to member 3. The hook 9 may engage any one of the loops 10,-the particular member to be engaged being de termined in adjusting the band to size and character of package or bundle to be protected.

Preferably the locking member 3 is made of comparatively stiff but springy or resilimember 7 thereof is so formed, tempered ent metal and the manifolded or Cushioning and constructed that it serves the doubly cooperative purpose of keeping the stops or loops 1O pressed close to the upper part of the tubular member 1 and, by reason of its restricted springiness or resiliency, the memher 7 will permit a yielding of the member 3 so that the member or hook 9 can be readily and easily adjusted to any one of the loops 10 for the purpose of binding the band 6 more or .less tight about a package. Fig. 9 illustrates the construction of the hook formed on the ends of the securingband. Thehook is made strong by doubly manifolding the metal upon itself. folded portions 15 and 18' serve tobrace' the hook 13. The character of the folded portions 15 and 18'is such that when in adjustment within the tubular device they are strongly cooperative and new in effect in lar device 1,and because the manifolding of the portion of metal forming the hook itself doubly strengthens its resisting influence and the adjustment of its extreme end between or within its -manifolded-head, and as between the manifoldedhead and the stop 10 and the upper inner-portion of the-tubular device 1, is such. that elfort' to withdraw the band will serve to expand and further tighten the hook-head within the device 1 and to most strongly prohibit such withdrawal.

Figs. 2, 3, and 1 illustrate the tag feature of the locking device :The metal of the tube 1 may be extended inthe form of a flat tag member 2 andnumerals or.letters entered thereon and the same numerals or letters entered. on. the body of the tubular member 1. The tag member 2 may be detached from the tubular device 1 after the shipment or package is. sealed and be sent to destination or,- as a check for baggage or the like, may be carried by the owner of trunk, valise or package, for use'in identifying the property at destination also for detecting it if it goes astray.

Various changes in the sizes, proportions, construction and arrangement of the several parts may be made without departing from my invention as set forth in the appended claims. 7

What I claim, is,-

.1. A tubular locking device having means therein for securing and holding the ends of a band or strap thrust therein and spaces on the exterior for identifying numbers and letters and having a flat extension from one side and perforated at the juncture with said tubular device and having space for numbers and letters which are duplicates of the numbers and letters on said tubular device. r

A tubular locking device having a lockin g membermountedtherein,saidlockingmember having a hook on one end for engaging a band or strap andhaving on the other'end a hook for engaging said tubular locking device and provided with a longitudinal slot therein, a stop member mounted in said] slot and detachably connected to said locking member and provided with a plurality of stops, and aband witha hook on one end for engaging the hook on said locking member .and having a hook. at the other end for engaging one of said stops.
