SETTING-LATCH.
Application filed February 9, 1920. Serial No. 357,232.
T 0 a?! QIILO'HI. it may concerns Be it knownthat I, LINNAEUS EjBaKim, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana. have invented new and useful Improvements in Setting-Latches, of
p which the following is a specification.
My improvement relates to self-measuring liquid dispensing apparatus of the type having an elevated container from which the liquid dispensed flows by gravity; and particularly to means for setting the same to dispense a predetermined quantity of liquid, ordinarily called a setting latch.
My setting latch while normally holding the latch bar in contact with the notched scale by spring pressure, permits its ready release therefrom. It is simple in construction, and is readily adaptable to dispensing apparatus so as to be easy to operate and conveniently located ,for use.
In the particular embodiment of-my invention selected for illustration, my setting latch is applied to a dispensing apparatus for outdoor use, having a vertically adjust- Figure l, is a front elevation of that portion of the apparatus which bears the notched scale, and shows the outer end of the discharge pipe and the setting latch set in mid tion,
Fig. 2, is a side elevation of the same with the setting latch set in filling position,
Fig. 3, shows the apparatus in the same position as Fig. 2, but in vertical section through the casing with the setting latch fully exposed to view, and
ig. 4, is an enlarged latch only, shown in perspective, with parts broken away and in section to expose the spring and plunger. 1
Referring now to the drawings, 6 is the portion of the casing of the apparatus shown; to which is fixed a flange, 6 whose .edges form a scale, e provided with notches, e graduated to gallons and half gallons. The notches and scale are on both flanges so as to be easily used and read from either side of the apparatus.
A vertically adjustable dischar e pipe, A, terminating abovein an'elevated container (not shown) has its bottom end an L a, with its horizontal portion extending outwardly through the slot between the Specification of Letters Patent.

flanges, c. The hose, I, is attached to the L The setting latch, D, is secured to the under side of the L, a, by a pivot, d, in such manner as to oscillate at right angles to the plane passing through the axes of both branches of the L, a A latch bar, 0?, is fixed by the pin, (P, or in any other suitable man nor in the latch block, d, in such a position that the latch bar will enter any of the notches, e, when the latch,-D, is in engagin position. ointers, 0Z fixed to the latch bar, d near the ends thereof indicate on the scales, e ,'the quantity of liquid required to be dispensed by the apparatus when the latch has been set in accordance withthe order.
A handle, 01, is secured to the latch block, (5 for convenience in manipulating the setting latch. The handle,.d is drilled at, d, to permit the shank of the plunger, d, to protrude through its upper side; and the latch block (i is drilled to form a receptacle for the head of this plunger, and also to receive a spring, (Z This spring tends to keep the plunger in extreme protruded position and when the hose its coupling, 2' keeps the plunger sufficiently depressed to cause it to hold the setting latch, D, securely against the notched scale whether in position for the latch bar, d, to enter one of the notches, e, or not.
A convenient way to lift the latch bar, d, from any of the nocthes, c, of the scale, is to grasp the handle, a3, around the hose, I, and coupling, 2', compressing the spring, d The discharge pipe, A, with its attendant parts including the hose and latch may then be easily adjusted upward or downward to any desired notch or indication on the scale, with the hand in. same position as when disengaging the latch.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States v 1. A liquid vending apparatus comprising a casing, an elevated container supported by the casing, an adjustable discharge pipe verticallymovablewithin the container, a fixed scale carried by the casing, a setting latch carried by the discharge pipe and means for normally holding the setting latch against the scale.
2. A liquid vending apparatus comprising a casing, an elevated container supported by the casing, an adjustable discharge pipe ally mowrabla within the casing 181, a fixed scale secured to the casing, sstmnglatch pivot/ed; t0 the discharge pips v and having a bar miapted. to engage notches .0K! tbs scale, and means carried by the latch normally hokl the bar against the-scale. 3; A liquid vending appartus comprisiizg a sawing, an elevated container suppmtarl by the casing, an adjustable discharge pipa w vertically movable within the *casing and csn'aimr, 21. scale secm'ad m the casing, 2. setting Mich pivahed to the disghax'ge pipe and havin a. hm. adapted' ta @ngage nbtches m1 tbs sca. e, a spring 'p1u:ng+z1?ca1'rie& by fine 15 laiwhsmd adaptagi. t0 xiurmuvlly 11016. said am against the scale and a handle 011 said lat-ch 'fm'. disengaging the hm fmm the scala.
