To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, LESTER BUDD, a citizen of the United States, residingat Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating Devices for Shaking-Grates, of which the following is a specification.
Large shaking grates for furnaces are often made in sections and the sections are adapted to be individually rocked by an attendant. Very often the attendant after rocking or shaking one of the sections does notmove the same kback into its level position. In other words, the bars of the section are permittedto remain in a tilted position and thisis detrimental tothe grate since it causes the quick burningl out of the grate bars in view of the fact that the extensions or edges-of the bars aresubjected to the heat of the fire bed and furthermore this action results in loss of fuel and heat.
One object of my present invention is to compel' an attendant to return the bars of each grate section to their normal level position before the bars of another section vcan be rocked.
Anotherobject is'to provide means for preventing the accidental rocking or displacement of the bars of the 'sections from their normal positions. 4
A further object is to make the device of my invention of a Simple and durable construction and so that it can be practically connected to shaking grates of various types.
These objects, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention connected to a shaking grate in which two sections of the grate are illustrated, the bars of any one of the sections being capable of being rocked independently of the bars of the other sections,

A bracket 14 includes sides 2,5 which are spaced apart and connected 'at their rear by a back plate 15. The 'back plate 15 is bolted to the front of the frame .7. vPlates or wings 16 and 17 are. detachably secured to the sides 25 of the bracket. Two rocking levers 18 and 19 arepivotally,mountedbetween the plates 16 and 17lon a bolt 20; said bolt passing through thev portion 15 and "I' wings 16 and 17 as clearly shown in Figfl. Each of the rocking levers 18 and .19has a lowerarm 21 and an upper arm 2.2,. The lower arms are respectively connected to the sha-king bars 1 1 nd 12 'and the upper arms 2 2 arev positioned between thejwings 16and 17 above ,the, portion -15. :Each of the'plates or wings 16 and 17 has two "lugs 23 which are spaced apart to provide a guideway 24 for a purpose hereinafter described. The lugs 23 project into the Spaces between the plates 16 and 17. Each of the plates 16 and 17 at its top has a yoked latch 26 pivoted thereto and capable of being swung into embracing position with the upper arm 22 of the adjacent rocking lever and these latches are operative to prevent accidental movement of the rocking levers when the latter have been returned to their normal positions after having been operated to shake the respective grate sections.
A single hand-lever 27 has a recess 28 eX- tending upwardly from its bottom; said recess beingr of the same contour as the upper arms of the rocking levers 18 and 19 so that when said hand-lever is slipped downward over either of the upper arms of the rocking levers the latter will it within said recess and the hand-lever can be moved to rock the levers 18 and 19 to effect the shaking of thegrate bars. The hand-lever 27 has projections 29`extending laterally in opposite directions from its Opposite sides; said projections, when the rocking levers 18 and 19 are in their proper normal positions with their connected grate bars level, being capable of being slid through the guideway 24 between the lugs 23 adjacent either of the upper arms 22 of the rocking levers 18 and 19 to permit the attachment of the handlever 27 to either` of the rocking levers. Then the hand-lever is thus properly se cured to either ofthe rocking levers, the projections 29, after having passed through the guideway 24, will be located at a level below the bottoms of the lugs 23 so that the rocking lever to which the hand-lever is attached can be actuated to cause the shaking of the grate section. However, it will be noted that the hand-lever 27 cannot be withdrawn from the rocking lever until the latter has been moved into a position in which the projection 29 on one side of the handlever is in :alinement with the guideway 24 since in any other position, the lugs 23 will serve as a stop to prevent the hand-lever from lbeing pulled olf the rocking lever.
Thus, after actuating one of the 'rocking levers, it is necessary to return the rocking lever to its normal and proper position with the grate bars level before the hand-lever can beremoved from the rocking lever. In this manner, the attendant is compelled to return the bars of each section to their proper positions before he can remove the handlever for attachment to another one of the rocking levers.
When one ofthe rocking levers is to be actuated its embracing latch can be swung away therefrom to permit the attachment of the hand-lever and after the rocking lever has been actuated and brought back to its normal position the latch can again be swung j into embracing position with ,the rocking lever and thereby hold the'lever against accidental movement.
While I have described my invention as taking a -particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention' may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come with in the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as newand desire to secure by Let ters Patent is A device of the character described including a grate frame, a part secured to said frame and having an upwardly extending fixed side plate with two laterally projecting lugs spaced apart to ,provide a guideway therebetween; a pivoted grate-rocking lever having an arm movable ina plane to the side of and spacedvfrom the endsof said lugs; and a removable operating lever having an end portion vproviding a socket adapted to slide over said arm, said portion of the lever having a projectionadapted to move downwardly in said guideway betweensaid lugs to a level below them,'said arm extending to a position abovefsaid lugs to facilitate the application ofl said portion of the operating 1 lever to saidl arm with saidproj'ection in alinement withsaidguideway, said lugs and projection preventing Vthe `removal of said operating lever when said projection is out of alinement with said guideway, j
