PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH C. I-IASLAM, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
HAT-SHAPING DEVICE.
Application filed July 21,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Josnrrr C. HASLAM, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Hat-Shaping Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hat shaping devices wherein a pair of clamps operate in conjunction with each other to engage the internal surface or sides of a fold within a hat crown at the ends of said fold and adjacent to the sides of the hat.
The primary object of my invention is to provide an improved hat shaping device adapted to retain the central crease within a hat crown open in the central portion and closed at the ends thereof.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved hat shaping device comprising a pair of con .nected clamps adapted to provide a comparatively sharp point in the central fold of a hat at the front and rear ends thereof.
1 accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved. device disclosed in the drawings forming a part of the present specification wherein like characters of reference designate similar parts throughout said specification and drawings, and in which- Figure 1, is a broken side elevation of a hat disclosing my improvement applied thereto;
Fig. 2, is a front perspective view of a hat disclosing the shape imparted thereto by my improved shaping device;
Fig. 3, is an enlarged detailed view of the device removed from the hat;
4:, is a side elevation of a modified form of the invention; and
Fig. 5, is an enlarged vertical sectional view on line of Fig. 4-, in the direction indicated.
Referring to the drawings the numeral. 1, is used to designate a pair of U-shaped resilient spring clamps held in spaced relation, by means of a connecting member 2, formed integral with said clamps 1.
Each clamp has the opposite ends of the clamping edges thereof extended beyond the body portion of said clamps as at 3.
The clamps 1, are arranged to engage and hold together the internal sides of a central fold 4., Within a ha crown 6., and at the ends Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25. 1921.
1929. Serial No. 397,984.
of said fold as disclosed in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
The extended clamping edges 3, of the clamps l, engage said fold or crease 4, at the junction thereof with the sides of the hat crown 6, to produce comparatively sharp points in the fabric as at 7, leaving the central portion of the fold 4;, open as disclosed at 8, in Fig. 2, of the drawings.
By means of this novel device and arrangement the central fold is permitted to retain a natural appearance between the ends thereof instead of being held tightly together throughout nearly the entire length thereof as is the case where a single central clamp is employed to engage the fold 4.
In Fig. 4, I have disclosed a modified form of the invention wherein the clamps 1, are connected by means of a connecting web or ribbon 9, attached in any suitable manner to the clamps l, which ribbon 9 may have the name or advertisement of the dealer affixed thereto.
This form of the invention is applied as hereinbefore described for the preferred form and produces the same effect. The ribbon 9, attaches the clamps 1, together and thereby prevents loss of one clamp should it inadvertently become detached.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A. hat shaping device comprising a pair of spring clamps having the outer ends of their clamping edges prolonged beyond the body thereof to engage the inner sides of a central fold within a hat crown, said pro jecting edges adapted to engage said fold adjacent the side of the crown to form a point at the outer junction of said fold with the sides of said crown; and means for connecting said clamps.
2. A hat shaping device comprising a pair of U-shaped spring clamps held in spaced relation by a connecting member formed integral therewith, the outer ends of said my signature,
JOSEPH. o. HASLAM,
