Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- GHABLESYSTILI'MAN WILLEY, OF WASHINGTON, INDIANA.
LUBRICANT;
No Drawing.
T 0 all whom it may conceww Be it known that I, CHARLES S. WILLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of.Daviess and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lubricants, of which the following is a specificatlon.
This invention relates to a" new and use- 7 ful lubricant and aims to provide a composition for lubricating purposes, which will at the same time act to extinguish a flame, the {invention being especially useful in; journal boxes of railroad rolling stock.
It is well known that journals of this character frequently become dry and overheated, due to the absence of proper lubricant, which frequently gives outduring a long run,
The journal boxes are usually packed with grease and waste, and when the journals become overheated, this waste catches fire. Numerous attempts have been made to provide for extinguishing a flame resulting from the hot-box, such as suspending a water-bag over the box and permitting water to' drip on the journal.
The present invention aims to provide a composition, which may be placed within hotoxes upon the hot journals, which will Specification of Letters Patent.
smother the flame, and which also act as a lubrlcant, giving the journal time to cool off while running.
The composition consists of the following ingredients combined in the proportions stated, viz:
Graphite l 75% Talcum 20% Borax 5% These ingredients are thoroughly mixed, and the powder resulting from this mixture may be put up in suitable packages and the same applied to journal boxes of any char acter for the purpose of providing a lubricant to act as a flame extinguisher.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
The herein described lubricant having fireextinguishing ualities consisting of 75% powdered-grap ite, 20% powdered talcum and 5% powdered borax',thoroughly mixed to provide a fireproofing powder substantially for the purpose specified. In testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
CHARLES STILLMAN WILLEY.
