WHEEL-HOLDER FOR RAILWAY-CARS.

Be it known that I, Orrrs M. McGUIRn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Morrill, State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful VVheel-Holder for Railway-Cars; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inventlon, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to wheel holders for railway cars, and has for its object to provide a device of this character adapted to be secured to the journal box of a truck and extend upwardly and arch over the upper side of the truck wheel and form means whereby upon breaking bf the journal with in the journal box, the journal box will be prevented from dropping downwardly into engagement with the cross ties of the railway and causing the car to be wrecked and cars following to be wrecked, said wheel being held in sliding engagement with the rail by the wheel holder.

It has been found that where a journal becomes broken that sometimes the wheels become stuck, and the wheels will slide for miles on the rail without derailing the train,

therefore it is a further object to provide positive means for holding the wheel in engagement with the rail after the journal has become broken or burnt Off.

With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a railway car truck showing the wheel holders applied thereto.

journal boxes the journals 3 are rotatably mounted and surrounded with lubricant. It has been found that the journals 3 at times break or are burnt off, and under which conditions one of the ends 2 of the beam 1 drops and engages the road bed, particularly the cross ties and consequently the train is derailed, particularly the car carrying the beam 1 the cars following. To overcome this difiiculty and to provide means for holding the wheels 4 in slidable engagement with the treads 5 of the rails 6, wheel holders 7 are provided. Each wheel holder 7 comprises a plate 8 secured as at 9 to the upper side of the journal box 2, and having upwardly extending diverging arms 10, the upper ends of which arms are provided with arched portions 11, which arch the upper side 12 of the wheel and terminate in an arcuate connecting bar 13 which overlies the upper side 12 of the wheel. It will be seen that if the journal 3 becomes broken that the upper side 12, will when the journal box 4t drops downwardly, be engaged by the arched portions 11 of the wheel holder 7, and that said wheel will be held in sliding engagement with the tread 5, thereby preventing derailment, and at the same time allowing the train to be propelled in the usual manner to a place where the car with the broken journal may be repaired or replaced with a new car. It has been found that where the journals have been worn or broken and the wheel becomes stuck in some manner with its tread in engagement with the tread of the rail, that the car may be moved for many miles by the wheel supporting the car and sliding on the rail. It will be seen that the wheel holder will provide positive means for holding the wheel where by it may be moved for great distances without danger. It will also be seen that the device is simple in construction and so con structed that it may be easily and quickly applied to trucks now in use without modifying the construction of the truck.
