  • This invention relates to pins more particularly to that type known as cuff and beauty pins and is animprovement on my prior Patent No. 1,071,564, patented August 26, 1913; and the object of this invention is to provide an improved pin of this character, the shell or body of which may be formed of solid precious sheet metal and of extremely thin stock, and to mount a specially-formed pin stem between the joint ears of the pin body, which is provided with a laterally-extending stop or fulcrumed lug adapted to engage the rolled edge of the body portion at a point forward of the front edge of the joint ears, when the pin tongue is in closed position, which construction provides a most efficient and effective stop or fulcrum for a pin of this light construction.

To all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, EUGENE lVIOREI-IOUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pins more particularly to that type known as cuff and beauty pins and is animprovement on my prior Patent No. 1,071,564, patented August 26, 1913; and the object of this invention is to provide an improved pin of this character, the shell or body of which may be formed of solid precious sheet metal and of extremely thin stock, and to mount a specially-formed pin stem between the joint ears of the pin body, which is provided with a laterally-extending stop or fulcrumed lug adapted to engage the rolled edge of the body portion at a point forward of the front edge of the joint ears, when the pin tongue is in closed position, which construction provides a most efficient and effective stop or fulcrum for a pin of this light construction.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the following detail description is taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the body portion of my improved pin in section and showing the improved pin stem as fulcrumed on the rolled edge of the body.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the pin tongue as blanked out of sheet stock with the lug member formed integral there with.
Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 2 but showing the lug as bent to extend laterally to engage the rolled edge of the pin body.
Fig. 4 is a section on line 4L4; of Fig. 1, showing the fulcrumed lug on the head of the pin stem as offset laterally and engaging the rolled edge of the body.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the under side of my improved pin with my improved pin tongue mounted therein.
With reference to the drawings, 10 designates the body portion of a .so-called onepiece cuff or beauty pin in which the catch member 11 and joint ears 12 are all formed integral with the body portion of the pin.
It is found in practice that where a pin of this construction is formed of very thin stock the edges of the body must be rolled as at 13 in order to stiffen the same.
It is also found that where a pin tongue 14 is mounted between joint ears formed of such very thin stock and of a soft precious metal, and when the head of the pin tongue is provided with lateral extensions engaging the edge of the joint ears, as illustrated in my prior patent above referred to, that the constant engagement of the fulcrum lug with this very thin edge of the joint ears. will soon wear or force the stock to yield under the heavy spring tension of the pin tongue, to such an extent that the pin tongue soon loses its spring tension, and its effectiveness is gone.
Then again it will be noted that where the lug engages the edge of the ear, that the contact is on an acute angle to the line of thrust and, therefore, such a fulcrumed edge is more susceptible to wear and to distortion from the thrust so that a very little of such wear and distortion will destroy the efficiency of the fulcrum and the effectiveness of the pin tongue as a retaining member.
To obviate this difficulty and provide a stop on the body Which will not become worn or the stock distorted, I have formed a lug 15 on the lower forward edge of the pin tongue head 16 which lug is offset as at 17 to extend laterally, sufliciently to rest squarely upon the thickened or rolled edge 13 of the pin body when the pin-stem tongue is in operative position. By this construction it will be seen that the rolled edge re-- ceives pressure at substantially a right angle to the line of thrust; then again by so positioning the hi that it cannot engage the rolled edge of t e body this fulcrumed lug is carried considerably forward from where it would be if engaging the edge of the ear providing the maximum support.
My improved pin when formed of precious metal, may be made of extremely thin stock and still possess a strength sufficient to withstand all of the strains and stresses which it is normally called upon to undergo in action, and its construction is extremely simple and inexpensive for a pin formed of precious metal.
The foregoing description is directed solely toward the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined andlimited only by the terms of the appended claim.

In a pin, a trough-shaped body portion having inwardly rolled side edges and integral joint ears near one end of said body, in comblnation with a pm tongue provlded With a head portion pivoted in 'said ears and 1 front edge of said joint ears when said pin tongue is in closed position. v
