mivron r on. Honnms' noes To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, GRovnR GUTHRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Massena, in the county of Cass and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Holding Hogs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a device for holding hogs when inserting a ring in the snout, and the object is to provide a device which shall include a loop portion, or noose to be passed around the nose of the animal, and means for applying tension to the noose.
A further object is to provide a device of the character described which shall include a tubular member with a rod movable longitudinally therein, means for retaining the rod in a given'position, anda flexible element having connection with one end of the rod and forming a noose adapted) to be tightened around the nose of the animal by moving the rod lengthwise in the tube, and allowing it to lock automatically against the spring locking member, carried on the tubular member. c
The invention has for a further object, the provision of a device of the character described which will be of extremely simple construction and operation and which may be'readily operated by a single party for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the foregoing and other objects in view aS will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements as hereinafter more specifically set forth, claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing in which: i
The viewis a longitudinal section through the complete device.
Referring more in detail to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts 10 indicates a tube which ispreferably formed of metal or the like and which may be provided with end portions or caps 11 and 12. The cap 11 is apertured centrally, providing for the pasj SneQ i of l e t ntl Patented. Oct. 11, 1921 Application filed'August 25, 1920. Serial No. 405,794
sage therethrough of a longitudinally movable rod 13 provide-d with teeth 14: on one edge and a ring portion 15 on the outer end. A spring 16 is secured at a point 17 to the tube 10, and the free end is adapted to engage any of the teeth of the rod in order to retain-it in an adjusted position.
Connected with the opposite end of the rod, and within the tube 10, is a flexible element, such as a Wire of comparatively soft metal, this wire being designated 18, and passing through apertures 19 and 20 in the cap 12, one end of the wire being connected with the end of the rod 13. An opening 21 is formed in the side of tube 10, adjacent the cap 12 and the other end of said flexible element passes therethrough and is secured upon itself, as shown at 22, thereby providing a stationary loop 23 so that the size of noose may be varied by operation of the 0pposite end of the flexible element 18 as the rod 13 moves inwardly and outwardly through the cap 11 at the opposite end of the tube.
It will be noted that both of the caps 11 and 12 are preferably threaded on the tube 10 and serve to close the opposite ends thereof and prevent dirt from working into the tube 10.
In use of the device, the rod 13 is thrust forth to inner position in order that the noose may be of suflicient size. This noose is then slipped over the nose of the hog, the animal having preferably been driven into confined space, so that it will have but little chance to move and the noose is then tight ened by pulling the rod 13 outwardly with reference to the tube cap 11, the spring 16 successively engaging the teeth 14: during the tightening operation and retaining the rod and noose in a fixed position when the latter is sufficiently tightened. The ring is then placed in the snout of the hog, the tube 10 being held in one hand, in order to have the other hand free. Upon completion of the operation, the handle or ring 15 and the rod 13 are then turned to one side in order to free the spring from the notches, making it possible to release the noose and proceed with the next operation.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it
