OPI-ITHALIVIIC MOUNTING.
innesto.
Application filed April 6,
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK R. BISHOP, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ophthalmic Mountings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to lens frames, comprising rims of the non-metallic type.
In structures of this type` the diffe-rence in character of the materials ofthe constituent parts make it diflicult to firmly connect or unite the attached or adjacent parts. The essential objects of my invention are to afford a secure and rigid fastening of the bridge or spring to the lens rims; to render the fastening invisible to the observer from the front; and to attain these ends in a simple and inexpensively constructed means;
and adapted to facile assemblage.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists insuch parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pair of spectacles or eyeglasses embodying my invention,
Fig. 2, an enlarged section of the frame on line 2--2 of Fig. l,
Fig. 3, an enlarged longitudinal section of a portion vof the same on line 3--3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4, a section of the frame taken on line l--l of Fig. 1,
Fig. 5, a longitudinal section of a portion of a detached rim taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 6, a perspective view of one of the attaching members before insertion into a rim.
Like reference characters indicate lilce parts throughout the views.
In the present and preferred construction illustrated 10 is the bridge or spring, 11 the rims or eyes of Xylonite or other nonmetallic material, 12 the end pieces, and 13 the lenses. y
Each rim is provided with theusual in- Specification of Letters Patent.

ternal annular groove 15, preferably V shaped in cross section. A longitudinally disposed oblong slot 16 is located in each rim extending diametrically therethrough. The walls 17 at the ends of the slot or opening1 are in this case inclined.
*ast toeach end of the bridge 10 or integral therewith, and at an angle thereto, s a broad fiat arcuate or segmental attaching plate 19 having preferably inclined end faces 20. rIhe curved edge of each plate remote from the bridge is provid-ed with a longitudinal slit or groove 21 extending the entire length of the plate forming parallel bifurcated portions or lips 22, as shown in Fig. 6;
the attaching plate 19 is inserted as a sliding tinto the opening 16 of the rim, and then by means of an angular swaging tool inserted between the lips the latter are forced apart outwardly and downwardly upon the walls of the groove or channel 15 and conform to their angular inclinations. The lens 13 is thereafter inserted in the annular groove 15 in the usual manner.
I claim Y 1. In an ophthalmic mounting, a rimv provided with an oblong opening, a bridge, an attaching plate on the bridge seated in the opening, and diverging lips on the plate engaging the rim.
2. In an ophthalmic mounting, a nonmetallic rim provided with a longitudinally disposed opening, a bridge, Va metallic attaching plate upon the bridge disposed at an angle thereto, and lips integral with the plate remote from the bridge overlapping the rim.
3. In an ophthalmic mounting, a nonmetallic rim provided with an oblong central opening formed with inclined ends, a bridge, ka segmental attachingplate seated in the opening and registering with said ends, and diverging lips on the edge of the plate opposite the bridge overlapping the rim.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
FREDERICK It. BISHOP.
