the present improvements relate to a type of oiling mechanism used in conjunction with such power head.
The object of my invention is the provision of a casing adapted to contain a quan-.
tity of lubricant, rotatable operating mechanism mounted within the casing, as also a substantially vertical guide within it and a slide mounted on the guide on which it reciprocates, and having means for connecting it with the apparatus to be operated by the power head, and a connection between such slide and the actuating mechanism, all of these devices being within the casing and adapted to be lubricated by the contained lubricant, save the (30111180171011 between the slide and the outside apparatus, which is without the casing.
Another object of my present improvement in reference to oiling devices is that as the reciprocating sleeve or member travels back and forth it shall cause a connected oiler in the form of a tube and valve to receive the lubricant-generally contained in the power head casing and deliver it at or near the other extremity of the sliding member, so'as to reciprocate its bearing surface.

The power head illustrated comprises a casing 1 adapted to contain quantity of lubricant, the casing in this instance hav ing a well 1 divided ofif from the interior of the casing and adapted to rece'r'veynot onl the'lubricant but the oiler'to be present y described. This casing has a removable cover 2 and a slotted o ening 3 and has mounted within it a drlving shaft 4 carrying pinions 5, as also a pair of driven gears 6, the latter having a wrist pin 7 Y operating a pitman 8 which occupies a position between the gear wheel 6. The pitman is connected at its upper end to a sleeve or sliding member 9 fitted to travel upon a guide or shaft 10. The upper end of the sleeve is fashioned to constitute a cup 11 to receive a lubricant in the manner ently to appear.
An oiling device is connected with the sleeve consisting of a tube 12 Whose upper end, as shown at 13, is arranged to dis pres- 4 charge into the cup 11 and whose lower end carries a valve casing 14 with a ball or other suitable valve 15 resting on a seat 16, the valve caslng and its ball being adapted to enter the oil sump 2 when the sleeve moves in its lower field of travel. The ball 1s lifted by the resistance of the oil which flows ast. the ball into the tube'l2. When the tu e is lifted, as on the up-stroke, the ball or valve seats and retains the oil so delivered into the tube. After a few strokes the tube will become filled with oil so that each additional stroke will cause an overflow of oil from the tube into the cup 11. As the sleeve reciprocates the lubricant will be applied to the guide shaft and will'work its way down between the sleeve and the shaft and meet whatever oil has entered at the lower end of the sleeve and between it and the shaft. In this way the sleeve is kept perfectly lubricated, without adjustment or manual manipulation, while the general power mechanism within the casing is also perfectly and completely lubricated. The splashings are suflicient to keep the connection between the sleeve and the upper -be durable, highly efiicient and smoothworking, and to transmit the rotary motion of the gear wheels to the reciprocating slide or member '9 in an efiectual manner to enable the slide to perform the heavy duty of raising and lowering, smoothly and without jar, long heavy pump piston rods with their pistons and loads of water, as well on the up as on the 'down stroke.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a power head, the combination, with a casing adapted to contain a quantity of lubricant, rotatable operating mechanism therein, and a vertical guide within the casing, of a slide mounted on said guide, adapted to reciprocate and having means for connection with an apparatus to be operated thereby, and an operating connection between said slide and the rotatable actuating mechanism within the casing.
2. In a power head, the combination, with a casing adapted to contain a quantity of lubricant, rotatable operating mechanism therein, and a vertical guide within the easing, of a slide mounted on said guide, adapted to reciprocate and having means for connection with an apparatus to be operated thereby, an operating connection between said slide and the rotatable actuating mechanism within the casing, and an oil pumpin tube connected with said slide and a apted to deliver oil from the casing to the upper end of the slide.
3. In a power head, the combination, with a casing, rotatable operating mechanism therein, and a vertical guide shaft in the casing and extending 'above the lubricantline, of a sleeve mounted on said shaft and adapted to reciprocate, an operating connection between said sleeve and the rotatable actuating mechanism, an oiler connect-- line, and an oil well in the casing, of a sleeve mounted on said shaft and having a cup in its upper end, an oiler comprising a tube connected to the sleeve, adapted at its lower end to enter said well and having a valve and adapted at its other end to discharge oil into said cup.
5. In a power head, the combination, with a casing adapted to contain a lubricant, a well at the bottom of said casing divided off therefrom, a fixed guide shaft held by the casing and extending above the lubricantline, a sleeve mounted on said shaft and having a cup at its upper end, an oiler tube secured to said sleeve, adapted at its lower end to enter said oil well and having a valve in said end and adapted at its upper end to discharge lubricant to said cup.
