MODE OF CONSTRUCTING BRIGHT DIES FOR STAMPING HIGHLY-POLISHED BLANKS OR SHELLS FOR BUTTONS AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 1,392, dated October 31, 1839.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it knovvn that I, WILLiAM B. DUNBAR, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new, useful, and impro-ved method of con. structing bright dies for stamping highlypolished blanks or shells for buttons and for other purposes by means ot' movable sec'- tions or types so formed as to admit of a high polish in all parts of each type separately and when combined to Jorm the intended figure in the face of the die.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I describe the construction and operation as follows, viz.:
The body of the die is, or may be, of iron and steel, made in the usual form and manner as seen in the accompanying drawings, Figure l. In the center of the face ofthe main die for buttons, I sink a mortise about half an inch deep and three fourths of an inch more or less broad, as seen in Fig. 2, A. From the bottom of this mortise, a small hole passes to the top or through the die. The face of the die around the mortise may then be highly polished; and the figure to be stamped or impressed is formed by separate types or sections so shaped that the face of each in all parts can be easily and highly polished separately, and when united Will give the figure intended and exactly lill the mortise, as seen in separate parts in Fig. 3, A, B, C, D-united and in place in Fig. 4, A. The specimen exhibited and described is 4for buttons of a particular gure; but the types and mortise may vary in number and shape to produce any fanciful ligure, and dies made on the same principle may be made and used for other purposes.
My invention consists in inserting or ingrafting into the face of the main die, by sections, or in separate parts, and in one or more mortise-S, such portions of the figure, as in connection with the general face of the die, will give the impression designed.
The object and the advantages of this invention are: so to dissect and divide the ligure, that the face of each section, in every part of it, may be accessible to the tools of the artist, to enable him to give form, color and polish to parts which he could not otherwise touch, and When united in place, Will With the face of the die, form the highly polished figure designed, or intended.
The main die being thus formed and tempered, will give the finishing impression to the other or match die when heated or annealed and applied with force.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The mode of forming the figure in the face of the main die, by types or movable sections of the figure so dissected, that each can be made and polished separately in all parts, and When united or set in place, Will in connection With the Jface of the die, form the figure, and make the impression intended, substantially in the manner specified above.
