BUSHING.
This invention relates to fittings for electrical conduits, and is of special utility when embodied in the construction of nipples or bushings to be installed at regions where flexible metallic conduits, or metallic sheathed conductors are led through a metallic wall such as the bulkhead of a vessel or the box forming part of a tubular metallic conduit system exposed to moisture in considerable quantities, as for example where a compartment in a vessel is flooded, although it will be understood that I contemplate the use of my improvements 1n any field for which they are adapted by their nature.
An important object of my inventionis to provide a self contained bushing or nipple structure of standard materials or parts, which can be readily installed without the use of special tools or preparation by machining or threading the bulkhead or other artition wall through which the conductor is to be led, permitting also ready removal and replacement of the parts, to permit re- 'moval, replacement or adjustment of the conductors.
The various features of my invention Wlll be illustrated and described fully in the accompanying drawings and specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, the figure is a View in vertical section of a bushing in the construction of which my improvements have been embodied, the same being shown in comblnation with a bulkhead, through whlch an armored conduit is led, the latter being shown in elevation.
In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description to enable ready and complete understanding of my improvements, the part designated by the reference numeral 1 is a nipple which may be a short section of ordinary piping threaded exteriorly to receive the other members of the bushing, which in the instance illustrated is to be applied to an armored conductor 2 shown with a'metallic sheath Specification of Letters Patent. I P t ted Sept. 20, 1921.
Application filed July 5, 1918. Serial No. 243,306.
of my invention, I have provided for rendering absolutely watertight the annular space betweenthe sheath 3 and the wall 5, and for this purpose any suitable means may be adopted to carry my invention into effect, and as one convenient form of device for this purpose I have shown on each side of the bulkhead 5 a member 6 combined with gaskets 7 and 8 engaged respectively with the bulkhead 5 and with the sheath 3, the members 6 being threaded internally to enable them to be run upon the nipple 1. so as to force the gasket 7 on each side against the wall 5 surrounding the aperture l, while the members 6 are also threaded exteriorly to receive inwardly threaded sleeves 9, having flanges 10 to compress the gaskets 8 into water-tight engagement with the periphery of the sheath 3. I
From the above description and reference to the drawings it will be seen that no moisture can pass through the aperture 4 from one side of the wall 5 to the other side unless by design the sheath 3 should be used as a fluid conduit, which may be done if occasion should arise, and it is further to be noted that simply by loosening the members 9, without removing them from the members 6, the gaskets 8 can be released from compression, and if formed of elastic material their natural resiliency will result in an enlargement of their central apertures sufiicient to permit withdrawal and re lacement or re-adjustment of the sheath It will further be observed that there may be a considerable variation in the size of the metallic sheath 3 or of the hole 4, so that the bushing as a whole may be formed of parts of standard size; also that either gasket 8 and its holding member 9 may be removed without absolutely impairing the watertight character of the joint on the opposite side of the wall, but under the severe conditions existing in war vessels I prefer to form the device as illustrated.
Having illustrated and described my invention thus fully and suitable means to carry the same into effect, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the specific materials and structural forms selected for illustration and description, nor
in general do I limit mysel'i otherwise than as set forth in the claims read in connection with this specification.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is 1. A bushing of the class described, com prising a central nipple threaded exteriorly, a plurality of intermediate nipple-s threaded interiorly and seated upon said central nipple toward the respective ends thereof, and a plurality of outer nipples screwed upon said intermediate nipples, in combination with a plurality of gaskets interposed be tween said outer and intermediate nipples in position to be constricted into water-tight engagement with an axially arranged conduit member passing through an aperture in a wall, and gaskets surrounding said central nipple in position to be forced against the opposite sides of said wall, surrounding said aperture, by engagement of said intermediate nipples with said gaskets.
2. The combination with a wall having an aperture, of a sheath passing through said aperture, a central nipple also in said aperture surroundingsaid sheath, means to hold said nipple on one side of said wall, an intermediate nipple screwed upon said nipple at the other side of said wall, an outer nipple screwed upon said intermediate nipple, a gasket forming a water-tight joint between said intermediate nipple and said wall, and a gasket forming a Water-tight joint between said intermediate and outer nipples and said sheath.
Signed at New York, in the county and State of New York, this 18th day of June,
ADNAH MoMURTR-IE. Witnesses: ALEX. C. PROUDFIT, H. VAN Corr HOLLAND.
