WILLIAM G. ENTREKIN AND JAMES BRAMBLE, JR., OF PHILADELPHIA, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURNlSHlNG-PRESSES FOR PHOTOGRAPHS.
Specification forming part of Lettere Patent No. 139,132, dated May 520, 1873 application filed April 19, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM Gr. ENTRE- KIN and J AMEs BRAMBLE, Jr., ofBhiladelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Burnisher and Press for Photograph- (Jard Board; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a cross-section, Fig. 2 is a front view, and Fig. 3 is a view, of the burnisher.
The object of our invention is to prevent cards, while passing in contact with the heated burnisher, from stopping, and also to press the cards after they are burnished.
In the drawing, E is a roughened roll supported in and between the two uprights 0 U, secured upon the base D. Said roll is re- Volved by a crank or other means, and is constructed With a draw-filed or tluted surface to facilitate the passage of the card over the heated burnisher, and with raised ends or flanges to protect the polished surface of the burnisher when a card is not passing through. The burnisher f is constructed of steel or other material, and is embedded in a groove, fl, in the plate F, so that it may be replaced when worn or injured, which plate is pivoted in the upright D' at f and is made adjustable with respect to the roughened and flanged roll E by means of the wedge-shaped yoke G, which is operated by means of the thumb-screw g, said wedge being forced between lugs H H on the uprights 0 O and the bottom of the burnisher-plate F. A gas-jet, I i, is located below the plate F, by means of which the plate and burnisher is kept in a heated condition. A and B are feed and pressure rolls operated by suitable gearing from the roll E. The top roll A is made adjustable in its bearings in the upright C, and its pressure is regulated by means of' the thumb-screws o!y a.
The Operation of our machine is as follows: After the burnisher has been properly adjusted to the roughened roll E by means of the wedge-shaped yoke G and thum b-screw g, and has been properly heated, and alter the pressure of roll A has been properly adjusted by means of the thumb-screws aa, a card is inserted between the burnisher and its pressureroll E, and when said card has passed through to the feed and pressure rolls A and B they take it up and carry it along, thus preventing the card from stopping upon the heated burnisher, which is the case in similar machines, and at the same time presses and finishes it.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters PatT ent is- 13 In a photograph-burnishin g apparatus the combination of a burnisher and roll with independent feed and pressure mechanism, substantially as described.
2. The plate F provided With a recess in combination with the removable burnisher f, substantially as described.
3. The wedge-yoke G, in combination with the lugs H H, by Which the burnishing-plate is adjusted to the roll E, substantially as described.
4. The combination of an adjustable burnisher and roll with independent feed or pressure mechanism, and a heating apparatus, substantially as described.
The above specilication of our said invention signed and witnessed at Philadelphia, this lth day of April, A. D. 1873.
