Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QEEIcE;
JOHN CULLEN, OF OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-SWITCH SIGNALS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,046, dated May 20, 1873; application filed February 2l, 1873. A
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J onN CULLEN, of Oxford, in the county of Lafayette and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Railroad-Switch Signals, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to improve the signals of railroad-switches so as to insure greater safety in running the trains; and it consists inconnecting with the signal-lever two or more reectors by which the head-light of an approaching locomotive will be reflected and the position of the signal indicated to the engineer.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure lis a face view of my invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.4
A is the signal-lever. B is the lever stand. O is the fulcrum of the lever. The signallever is operated by means of the bar D in the usual manner, and fastened in position, either vertical or inclined, by means of the pin E in the holes F. G represents reiiectors at- I cached to the signal-lever A by means of a clamp or otherwise.
In this example of my invention I employ three reliectors to form a line, but they may be of any number above one, and also of any convenient size. These reflectors may be made of any suitable material, and in any suitable form. The'relectors are attached to the bar the signal-lever, whether it be perpendicular or inclined.
To warn the engineer of danger ahead, a reflector may be placed on the rear car of a 'train ahead, which it is believed would be an improvement upon the signal-lantern now in use.
The reflector above described may be colored so as to reflect white, red, blue, or other color.
Having thus described my invention, I i
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The reflectors G, two or more, in combination with the lever A, as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with ythe reflectors G, the i bar H, hinge J, and clamp I, or their equivalents, as and for the purposes described.
JOHN OULLEN. Witnesses:
