To all whom t may concern.'
vBe it known that I, FRANK S. Banks, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Truck-F rames for Mine-Cars, of which the vfollowing is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to Ina-ke and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. My invention relates generally to mine cars and more particularly to the truck frame and journal boxes therefor, the principal objects of my invention being to generally improve upon and simplify the construction of mine car truck frames and journal boxes and to provide a relatively simple, strong and durable truck frame that can be easily and cheaply manufactured, readily applied to mine cars and which will serve as a firm and substantial support for the journal boxes in which the wheel carrying axles are journaled.
Further objects of my invention are, to provide a mine car truck frame with pockets that are adapted to receive and retain the journal boxes and the latter being constructed so that they are self-alning, thereby eliminating the time and labor ordinarily involved in setting the journal boxes in true positions.
A still further obj ect of my invention is to provide an improved form of journal box for mine car truck frames and to construct the same so that grease or liquid lubricant can be readily delivered into the chamber within the box.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a mine car truck frame of my improved construction.

Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invention, 10, l0 designate the side members of my improved truck frame, said members being preferably-.constructed fr om commercially rolled channels disposed with their flanges projecting downwardly and said beams near their ends being bent downwardly to form substantially U- shaped portions 11 p ockets for the journal boxes that are associated with the truck. The webs of these side members l0 are provided at suitable points with erforations 12 that are adapted to receive bo ts or like fastening devices that secure the truck frame to the underside of the car body and the transversely disposed frame members 13 that are preferably formed of commercially rolled channelsliave their end portions positioned within the upper portions of the .spaces within the bearings or pockets 11 and the depending flanges of said transverse frame members are secured to the upper portions of the U-shaped bearings or pockets 11 of the side members 10 in any suitable manner, preferably yby means of rivets 14. The end portions of the webs of the transverse members 13 are bent or pressed upwardly as designated by 15, such construction being employed in order to accommodate bearing lugs that are lformed lintegral with the tops of the journal oxes.
The bodies 16 of these journal. boxes are "substantially cylindrical in form and the annular surface 17 of the wall inclosing the main chamber in each box is smooth in order to form a bearing surface for antifriction members such as rollers 18 which surround the journal of the wheel carrying axle 19 and these antifriction members 18 are retained Within the journal box in any suitable'manner.

Formed integral with that portion of the body7 16 of each journal box that projects beyond the U- shaped bearing 11 are laterally projecting ears 22 with the inner faces of which are formed vertically disposed lugs 23, the faces of which are convex and when the boxes are properly positioned in the bearings 11 these curved faces bear directly against the outer faces of the outer flanges of those portions of the beams 10 that are bent downwardly to form the bearings 11. (See Figs. 4 and 6.) In all'forms of myinvention, it will be noted that the side frame members 1010a and the cross-members 13 are on thesame horizontal planeso that the floor or deck timbers arranged thereon must be notched outabove the upwardly bent portions 15 at the ends of the cross members. The combination with a mine car truck frame having side members in which are formed U-shaped bearings, of journal boxes mounted for rocking movement in said U- shaped bearings, and lugs projecting-laterally from the outer portions of said journal boxes, which lugs are adapted to bear against the outer faces of said U-shaped bearings.

16. In a mine car truck frame, a transverse member consistingr of a structural channel, the web of which is disposed horizontally andis provided with upwardly extending depressions at its opposite ends, each adapted to receive a journal box.
17. In a mine cartruck frame, a side member consisting of a structural channel which is bent downwardl and then upwardly near each end to orm a U-shaped journal box containing member.
18. In a mine car, longitudinal and transverse members secured to each other and at their securing points being respectively recessed in opposite directions to receive a journal box between them.
