Description
J. S. RY DER.
Bolt-Cutters.
Patented May 13, i873.
bla-138,940.
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB S. RYDEB, OF- SING SING, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT. IN BOLT-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,940, dated May 13, 1873 application filed March 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB S. RYDER, of Sing Sing, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bolt-Clippers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a perspective view of my boltclipper. Figs. 2 and 3 are details of the same.
This invention has relation to means for cutting oil or clipping nails, rods, and bolts 5 and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parts comprising the boltclipping instrument hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates the main jaw, which consists of a lever having a at or plate-like head, a, in which is formed an opening, b, having usually a square form. To this lever is pivoted at cl a second lever, B, the head e of which is made broad and strong, with an open center, f, to save metal. The lever A is provided at its upper or plate-like end with an arm, C, extending nearly at right angles with its main length, and pivoted at its end, as shown at h, to the movable jaw D. This jaw consists of a straight plate, having a cutting-edge, z, and an inclined or overhanging ilange, o,
curved in its length to correspond with 4the arc of a circle having its center at the pivot h. This iiange is designed to engage with the curved edge tongue w of the platehead a. of the main jaw A, thus keeping the jaws rmly bound together, and preventing them from being separated iiatwise or twisted apart when in operation. At its other end the movable jaw D is pivoted to the link E, which is in turn pivoted to the middle of the transverse end portion of the broad head of the lever B. The bolt to .be operated on is introduced through the opening b. The levers A and B are then drawn toward each other, bringing the jaw D across the opening b with great force, cutting through the bolt which is held by the walls of the opening b.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The boltvcutter, consisting of the lever A, having the opening b, and the arm C, extending at right-angles, or nearly so, with its main length, the lever B, the cutter-bar D having the curved flange u and the link E, subst-anstantially as specified. Y
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB S. RYDER.
