Be it known that LJAMEs R. MGGEE, a
citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented oer tain'new and useful Improvements in Automatic Railway-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to an improved automatic railway'gate for use at grade crossings, and is designed more particularly as an improvement on the structure shown in the United States Patent No.

Referring to the drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 isa'side elevation of the gate at one side of the crossing, and showing partly in section, means for operating same.

Referring now in detail to the drawings, the gate at each side of the crossing co1nprises two sections 6 and 7. These sections are in the form of lazy tongs, supported by 1356 924, granted October 26, 1920, to Joseph Kiss vand retract the lazy tongs.

'Thus it will be seen that when the motor M is operated in one direction all four pairs of lazy tongs will be simultaneously advanced, and when the motor is operated in the other direction the same will be retracted.
The means for throwing the closing-meek anism into operation comprises a trip arm 30 which is located on the railroad track and projects upwardly into the path of some portion of the railway vehicle. A similar trip arm 30 is provided on the track on the other side of the crossing. As the train approaches the crossing the trip arm 30 or 80 is rocked to temporarily close the switch 31 or 31. This closes the circuit from the source of electric energ 1 32 through the magnetic coil 33 wire 34 or 34, switch 31 or 31, wire or 35, thence through the wires 36 and 37 back to the source. As soon as the magnetic coil 83 is energized the switch 38 is closed. The circuit then passes from the source 32 through the switch 38, wire 39, switch 40, wire 41, motor M, wire 42 through the other pole of switch 38 and through wire 37 back to the source. The motor is thus operated to rotate the screw 20 and the arm 19 is advanced to the right as shown in Fig. 3. n
The depending lug 43 which has been holding the switch 44 open thus allows the switch 44 to close and by the time the gate has been closed the lug 43 reaches the switch 40 and opens the same, thus discontinuing the operation of the motor.
*vVhen the tram has passed the crossing and reached the trip arm 30 or 30 on the other side, said trip arm is thrown to close the switch 45 or 45. A current is then allowed to pass from the source 46 through wire 47, magnetic coil 48, wire 49, thence through wire 50, switch 45, wire 51 or through the switch 45 thence through wires 52 and 53, back to the source. This energizes the magnetic coil 48 and closes the switch 54. Current then passes through the wire 55, switch 44, wire 56, thence through the motor M and wire 57 through the other pole of the switch 54 back to the source. This operates the motor M in the opposite direction and opens the gates.
I claim as my invetnion:
1. In combination with a gate comprising a pair of lazy tongs, a toggle having one linkoperatively connected to one arm of the lazy tongs, the other link being pivotally connected to a fixed point, a reciprocable arm having a link connection with the tog gle and means for reciprocating said arm to operate said toggle to advance and retract said lazy tongs. 2. In combination with a gate comprising oppositely disposed pairs of lazytongs, a
toggle at each side of the opening to be closed, one link of each to gle being pivota-lly connected to a fixed point, the other link of the toggle being operatively connected with one arm of the lazy tongs, a
reciprocable rod and a pair of arms carriedlink operatively connected to one arm of the lazy tongs, a rock shaft on which the other link ofthe toggle is mounted, a similar gate at the opposite side of the crossing and a toggle for operating the same, one link of said last named toggle being mounted on the other end of said rock shaft, a reciprocable arm having a link connection with one of said toggles and means for reciprocating said arm to operate said toggles to advance and retract sald lazy tongs.
4. In combinatlon with a gate comprising oppositely, disposed pairs of lazy tongs, a
toggle at each side'of the openings to be closed, one link of said toggle being operatively connected with one arm of the corresponding pair of lazy tongs, a rock'shaft at each side of the opening on which the otherlink of the toggle is mounted, a similar gate at the opposite side of the crossing, and toggles for operating the same. said last named toggles each having one link mounted on the other end of one of said rock shafts, a reciprocal arm having a link connecting it with one of said toggles, and means for reciprocating said arm to operate said toggles to advalnce or retract said lazy tongs.
