Description
i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 ANDREW rmannmc smunm, ofmzrchwini. NEBRASI{A.
T0 all wlwm z't mag concern.
Be it known that I, ANDREW FREDERIG STURM, a eitizen of the United States, and. a residenbof Nehawka, in the county 0f Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented 0ertain new and useful Improvements in Bed- Springs and Auto-Cushions, of whichthe following is a speeification.
My invention is an improvement in bed springs und auto cushions and has for its object to provide an improved form of supporting spring arranged to obtain a maximum of resiliency and cushioning efi'ect, and wherein means is provided in connection with the mein spring, in the form of auxiliary springs arranged at the top of the main spring for holding the main springs in proper relation with respect to each other, while at the same time permitting them t0 yield laterally.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a portio 01 a mattress h'aving the improved spring,
F ig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of F ig. 1
Fig. 3 is a p erspective view of one of the anxiliary springs, 4
Fig. 4 is a froht view of 0ne of the main springs.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the mattress is composed of a series of main springs, each consisting 0f two similar portions 1 and l, connected by a coil 9. Each of' these portions is a spiral coil, tapering from 0ne end to the other, and the portions are arranged with their sma1l ends adjacent. At the small end each portion has a radially extending arm 8, and these arms are connected by a coil 9. The arms 8 ex-.
tend Weil outside of the spring and each main spring is formed from a s1ngle piece of wire, all of the parts being integral.
One portion of each spring is connected to a slat 2 in the usual manner, by means of staples 3 er the like, and the coils 9 of the outermost spring eonstituting the mattress are engaged by wires 01 rods 4 whieh form a frame eneircling the springs. These rods 4 as shown in Fig. 2, pass through the coils 0f all of the outlyin'g springs 1-1 the said coils of the said springs being spaced directly outwardly from the springs. The slats 2 are connected in any suitable manner 130 form a rigid supp ort for the spring.

Spe cification of1i.e1;ters Pateht'. Patenbed Application mm Septeinber 1 1,1920. serial No. 409,530.
This arrangement Provides a very resilient and elastic mattress.. Bach portion of each main spring is resilient, and the said portions are resiliently eonneeted by means of the arms 8 and the coils 9.
With this construction, there is nothing to hold the tops of the springs 1 from lateral movetnent in every direction. The wires 4 are intermediate l;he ends of the springs 1,
and hence de not support the tops of even the outermost springs. In order to overcome this objection, I eonnect adjacent Springs by means of the auxiliary spring shown in Fig. 3. The said spring comprises a coil 5, having ab each end an arm 6 extending laterally from theplane of the coil, and the outer end of each arm has a hook 7. These hooks 7 of the auxiliary spring are en gaged with the topmost coils of the springs 1, thus connecting the said coils and connecting the springs. The arrangement is such that while the tops of ehe springs may move toward er from each other, they Will, when deformed, return to normal position, under the impulse of the springs 567. Thus, increased flexibility, with increased resiliency is provided, and the mattress is longer lived because it does not get out of shape so easily under pressure.
I claim:
1. A mattress or cushion comprising a supporting frame, coiled springs seated on the frame, each spring eonsisting of two similar portions of greatesl: diameter ab the outer ends and tapering toward their meeting ends, and connected by a coil ofl'set radially from the axis 0f the spring, a frame passing through the oifset eoils of the entermost springs of the mattress and the other ofl'set eoils being free, and resilient eonnections between the outermost coils c f the adj a- 1 cent springs anal similar eonnections between the corner spring and frame, said connections comprising a coil having ab each end an arm provided with a hook for engaging the coils 0f the first named springs.
2. In a mattress 0r cushion, the combination with the supporting frame 0f coil springs seated on the frame, each spring consisting of two similar portions of greatest diameter ab the outer ends, and tapering toward their meeting ends, and connected by a coil ofi'set radia11y from the axis of the spring, a frame passing through the coils 0f the outermost springs of the mattress, and resilient connections betWeen the outeimost coils 0f the adjacent springs.
8. In a mattress or cushion, thq combin'ati0n with the spporting franie, 0f Coil springs seated on the frameeach spring conslstlng 0f tw0 s1m11ar port1ons of great the outermost springs of the mat tress and connecti'ons between the spii1igS ddjacent each other.
. 4. In a mattress 01 cushion, a spring 0011- sisting of two similai portins, each a spira1 coil tapering toward its inner end, each portion having a radial arm at the said inner end and the arms being connectd by a c oil, said spring being of resilient inaterial.
