Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE. I
JOHN MILLER, OF WEST SALEM, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD-FILLINGS AND PAINT COMPOUNDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.'13S,914, dated May 13, 1873; application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN .MILLER, of West Salem, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in a Filling for (Jars, Coaches, Oarriages, and Buggies, to be applied on the bare Wood and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction of the same.
My invention relates to paints; and consists in the novel composition hereinafter described, which is designed for use both for priming and finishing purposes. It is also adapted for studing and crack-filling, and for general use when fine, smooth surfaces are required.
In preparing my paint I use the following formula, namely: I take four pints of coachmakers Japan and three pints of spirits of turpentine. To these I add three and one-half pints of raw linseed-oil, two-thirds of a pint of English carriage-varnish, one-third of a pint of French amber, sixteen pounds of White lead ground in oil, and twelve pounds of lampblack. The latter material is not added until it has been subjected to the action of fire for one hour to expel the oily matter therefrom.
When combined, the above-mentioned ingredients are ground together in a paint-mill, and thereby are made ready for use.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The painting compound herein described, composed of the materials and in the manner substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses: JOHN MILLER.
J. S. TEAGHOUT, 4 E. F. DELONG.
