To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. SHEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Control Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in oilcontrol valves for incubators and brooder heaters, and this invention includes a construction in its make-up which has three adjustments, to wit the minimum and maximum adjustments asnow used, with a third auxiliary adjustment by means of Which the needle-va1ve which controls the oil flow. can be closed at anytime without changingor derangingin any way the m1n1- mum and maximum adjustments already made. If the ioperator'wishes towork on his burner and shut off the oil, he does this with i s the auxiliary adjustment, leaving his maximum and minimum adjustments unchanged.
After he shall have completed his work and starts up the-burner again, he has his adjustment already made, and consequently all he need do is to open the valve by changing the auxiliary adjustment,- and thus control the oil by this adjustment until the burner is thoroughly generated and isready to take the maximum amount of oil, as per his original or previous adjustment at the maximum screw. j
In this particular, the present invention entirely overcomes certain objections heretofore raised, which required considerable time in the making of 're-adjustments when the light was extinguished, all of which is ren dered unnecessary when. the valve equipped with this auxiliary adjustment.
The foregoing and other features" of novelty will be illustrated, described and claimed hereinafter.

bottom of the visible feed opening conducts the oil to the burner (not shown).
Mounted on top of the visible oil feed opening 1, and secured thereto, is a casting 4. While this fastening might be effected in any approved manner, I prefer as a simple means of accomplishing it the use of a tubular nut 8, which screws on the external threads of the nipple 2 into a hole 9 formed therefor.
The casting at is counterbored through the longitudinal center to form an oil duct 5, which leads to, and discharges into, the nipple 2. This oilduct, it is understood, is
tapped into the oil font (not shown) and in the bore of the casting a for controlling the passage of oil through duct 5 and nipple 2, and the outer end of the stem of this valve protrudes beyond the casting, as shown, for a purpose that will be hereinafter fully described.
Oil is prevented from finding its way past the needle-valve when opened by the little cork or leather washer 10 at bottom end of the duct 5, and thispacking is held in position by the tension of the spring.
The casting 4 is provided with an uping arm 11 at the top,and this carries the minimum and maximum adjusting screws 12 and 13, respectively, they being located at a point where they are easily accessible and convenlent to manipulate. At its lower end and beneath the valve 7 the casting has a pairof lugs 14:.
The valve controlling lever 15 is fulthe arm of this lever above the fulcrum extending in the path of, and in close proximity'to. the protruding end of the needle-valve 7 and its extreme upper end in the space between the inner end of the minimum and maximum adjustment screws 12 and 13, by
wardly and horizontally-extending projecta which its adjustment is regulated. An auX- iliary lever is also fulcrumed on the pin 16 along side the control lever 15, and its upper end also extends into the path of the protruding end of the needle-valve 7. This auxiliary lever 17 has a flange 18 at one edge I which overlaps the outer edge of the lever 15, so that when lever 15 swings in one direction, the auxiliary lever 17 moves with it, whereas the latter is free to swing independinto the threaded eye 20 at the lower end of the auxiliary lever 17. 7
By means of the auxiliary lever, the needle-valve can be opened or closed without deranging or changing in the least the position of the minimum and maximum adjusting screws 1 and 13 at the top of the valve. VJithout this auxiliary adjustment 19, it is necessary to use the maximum adjusting screw to close the valve 7 and shut off the oil; and of course this also makes it necessary to change the posit-ion of the minimum adjusting screw 12. In other words, without the auxiliary adjustment it was necessary to change the maximum and minimum screws every time the operator wished to give the burner attention, and then after re-lighting he had to go through the entire process of re-adjustment. With the auxiliary adjustment, the previous adjustment of the maximum and minimum screws remains unchanged, so there is nothing further to do, after giving the burner. attention, but to start it, providing oil by means of the auxiliary adjustment until the burner is generated, then entirely releasing the auxiliary screw, and the valve will then function according to the previous adjustments.
I claim:
1. The combination of an oil pipe, means for discharging oil thereinto, a valve for controlling the How of oil, two levers in position to control the valve, said levers constructed and adapted to move independently of each other in one direction, and in position to actuate the valve, and adjustment screws for each of said levers.
2. The combination of a support, a casting having a duct therein, and a needle valve in said duct, a control lever, and an auxiliary lever fulcrumed at a common point extending in the path ofthe valve, whereby to actuate the valve, and minimum and maxi- -mum and auxiliary adjusting screws con nected with said levers for controlling the needle-valve.
3. The combination of a support, a casting secured thereto, two levers pivoted to the casting, one carrying an auxiliary adjustment screw in position to be forced against the support, minimum and maximum screws carried by the casting for regulating the movement of the main lever, and a springactuated valve carried by the casting in the path of said levers.
4-. The combination of a visible oil feed opening, casting secured thereon, said casting eounterbored to form an oil duct which discharges into the visible oil feed opening, a spring-actuated needle-valve in said duct, one end of which protrudes beyond the surface of the casting, the casting having an arm and lugs, two levers pivoted side by side to th lugs with portions in the path of the protruding end of the valve, said levers capable of moving together in one direction and independently in the other, an auxiliary adjustment screw carried by the auxiliary lever, and a minimum and maximum screw adjustment in the arm of the casting for regulating the position and movement of the main lever. j
5. The combination or" a visible oil teed opening, a nipple extending thereinto and discharging therein, a casting having a duct therein in communication with the nipple, a spring-actuated needle-valve for controlling the flow of oil through said duct, one end'oi said needle-valve protruding beyond the casting, two levers pivoted side by side to the casting, an auxiliary adjustment screw carried by one of said levers, and maximum and minimum adjustment screws in the cast ing on either side of the other lever for regulating the position and vibrations of. said lever.
6. The combination of a visible oil teed opening and a casting having a duct therein and a nipple in communication with the duct in position to extend into the visible oil teed opening, said nipple externally screwthreaded and a tubular nut which screws on the threads of the nipple into a socket in the visible oil feed opening for securing the castino' thereon. V
l. The combination with a visible oil feed opening and a casting secured thereto, said casting counterbored to form a duct, of a spring-actuated valve slidable in said duct, the duct having a washer therein which is held in position by the tension of the spring of the valve.
