BETAINING MEANS FOR FRAMES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 23, 1921.
Application filed October 2, 1920. Serial No. 414,345.
T 0 all an ham it may concern Be it known that I, CARL F. Bnnorrr, a citizen of the German Republic, and a resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Retaining Means for Frames; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals refer to like parts.
This invention relates to detachable means for securing pictures in frames.
I-Ieretofore it has been necessary to secure pictures in frames by brads or various metal clamps and the like, which makes it difiicult for the ordinary person not familiar with framing pictures to readily remove and replace pictures in the frames. It is the object of this invention to simplify changing pictures and frames whereby they may be very quickly removed and replaced and secured in position by the ordinary person.
The full nature of this invention will be understood from the accompanying drawings and the following description and claims.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the back of the picture frame showing the securing means mounted therein. Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the securing means.
In the drawings there is shown the back of a picture, including the frame 10 with the.
usual pasteboard back 11 mounted therein for holding the picture firmly against the glass 12. In the inner edge of the picture frame there are provided notches 13 opposite each other into which the securing means 14 is adapted to extend and engage so as to lie adjacent the pasteboard back 11, whereby said back and picture will be firmly held against the glass 12.
The securing means is comprised of either a wooden or metal member having a pair of spring-like or resilient arms 15 integral with the central block 16, said pair of arms extending in opposite directions from said block, as shown in Fig. 3. By simply pressing the ends of the arms together they may be inserted in the notches 13, as shown in Fig. 1, the tension caused by the bending of said arms inwardly exerting frictional hearing outwardly against the sides of the notches 13 so as to hold them in position.
It is obvious that by compressing said arms they may be readily removed from the notch and the picture removed from the frame.
Whereas the retaining member comprising the elements 15 and 16 are herein shown in a specific manner, any type of a resilient bow ma be used to accomplish the same result, a though that shown herein is preferable, and whereas the retaining member illus trated herein is primarily adapted for pictures and picture frames, it may be equally well used with respect to advertising matter and any other display which it is desired to mount in a frame.
It is to be understood that the slots 13 extend from the rear face of the frame to substantially the front face thereof, as shown in dotted lines. Therefore, the securing means 14 isseatable in the slots and is frictionally locked therein. This construction permits a standard frame to receive any thickness of glass front, picture and backboard and yet retain all of these three elements, or any other fillers, in the frame, in dependent of the width thereof. Thus, this device is adjustable, and one which will maintain all the foregoing parts in position regardless of their thickness.
The invention claimed is:
1. In combination with a frame having a glass mounted therein, of a display and a backboard for retaining said display in position in said frame, said frame being provided with a plurality of notches therein extending transversely thereof, of a retaining member comprising resilient prongs each prong being adapted to engage a transverse side of a notch for holding said display and backboard therein.
2. In combination with a frame having a glass mounted therein, of a display and a backboard for retaining said display in position in said frame, said frame being provided with a plurality of notches in a plu rality of sides, of a retaining member adapted to lie adjacent said backboard, and a pair of yielding prongs on each end thereof arranged whereby each pair of ends will enga e in one of said notches for frictionally olding said retaining member, backboard and display in said frame.
3. In combination with a frame havin a glass mounted therein, of a display an a backboard for retaining saiddisplay in po-' 'sition in said frame,
said frame having a plurality of transverse notches in a plurality of sides, of a retaining member comprising a double yielding bow adapted to lie adjacent 10 ber, backboard and displa therein.
In witness whereofil ave hereunto affixed my signature.
CARL F. BRECHT.
