To all whom it may concm Be it known that I, ARLE H. GooDMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Port Constructons for Furnaces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section of a portion of a glass tank furnace embodying my invention.

My invention has relation to port construc tion for furnaces and relates more particularly to means of novel character for facilitating the insert-ich and removal of the port coolers of the furnace.
My invention is designed to provide a constructon by which the coolers cmployed at the inner or nose ends of the partition wall between the and air ports of the :turnace may be more readily inserted and removed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated my invention as applied to a glass tenk tui-hace, but it will be readily understood th at it may be used in connection with other furnaces having similar gas and air port Construction.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 2 designates a portion of the body of a ;glass tank furnace. 3 designates the air port, 4 the air uptake, 5 the aas port and 6 the gas uptake. 7 is a horizontally eX- tending partition Wall which separates the air and gas ports in the usual manner.
It is customary in 'furnaces of this character to employ a cooler at the inner or nose end of the wall 7. The particular form of cooler which I have illustrated and which is shown at 8, consists of a hollow metal box having suitable connections 9 for circulating water or other cooling fluid therethrough. This box is seated against the inner end of the wall 7 and is supported, as best shown in Fig. 4, in the side walls 10 of the port structure.
In order to facilitate the insertion and `removal of these boxes so that they may be readily renewed, or removed for rcpairs and replaced, I provide each of the port side walls 10 with a removable portion 10 whose lower edges seat directly upon the inner portions of the cooler and which extend upwardly to the root wall ll. I also provide this root wall with a removable transverse section 12 which rests upon the upper end of the removable side portions 10 It will be readily seen that the portions 10 and 12 may be readily removed and that, when so removed, the cooler 8 can be quickly taken out and replaced. This makes the rcnewal or repair of the port coolers a relatively simple operation which can be carried out .in a short time and with very little delay in the operation of the furnaee. The removable side portions 10 are preferably' somewhat wedge-shaped in cross section, as shown in Fig. 3, and may he provided with shoulders 10 in order to make a better seating in the side walls 10.
I claim:
1. The eombination with a furnacc having an air port, a gas port, and a refractcry wall between said ports, ot a hollow water coolcd member extending transversely across the furnace and :forming an inward continu aton or extension of said wall, said member being seated at its ends in the side walla;` ot the furnace structure, and said side walls, together with the furnace root, above said member, each having a section which can be bodily removed to permit of removal and re placement of said member, substantially as described.
2, The combination with a furnace having an air port, a gas port, and a refractory wall between said ports, of a hollow water coolcd member extending transversely across the furnace and forming an inward Continuation or extension of said wall, said member being seated at its encls in the side walls of the furnaee structure, and said side walls, together with the furnace root', above said member, each having a section which can be bodily removed to permit of removal and replacement of said member, said member having its upper,`lower, and inner end surfaces directly exposed to the surrounding port spaces, substantially as described.
